Wanna' Make Comics? Start Here...

I brought an advance copy of this book into a college illustration class I teach. The class was quite impressed. In fact, two students went onto Amazon online and bought it instantly. Usually I discourage shopping during class, but Drawing Words and Writing Pictures is an answered prayer for the aspiring comics artist.

This is an ideal text for a 15-week class in comics. It also has guidance for starting an informal collective class. It includes suggestions for the stereotypical solitary artist, who the authors are gracious enough to refer to as ronin. There is a wealth of info on the narrative process, page design, lettering, pens, and even Photoshop scanning advice.

The authors' individual web pages present a lot this DIY info, so search out their sites, see if their philosophies appeal to you. The book contains multiple perspectives from two remarkable artists. Matt Madden is into "formalist" styles, working within Houdini-like constraints. Jessica Abel's La Perdida is one of the great masterpieces of the long-form graphic novel.

From George Herriman to Robert Crumb, Charles Burns, to Kaz and John Porcillino, the book is crammed with a diversity of styles. Wide-ranging and inclusive, no matter what one's preferred comics style, from manga to superhero to alternative, you will find something to like here.

Instructors will find the bibliography alone is worth the price of admission, I teach a seven-week college comics course each fall. My plan is to email the students over the summer, tell them to get this book and get started on the exercises. The ronins will get a head start and their classmates will lose face.

Scott McCloud's Making Comics is also a valuable college course text for serious students, who have some background in reading comics and thinking critically about the artform. Drawing Words and Writing Pictures, however, has practical exercises for students at any level. Highly recommended.

Don't miss this one.

I've bought just about all the "How To Draw Comics" type books out there, and they are mostly pretty mediocre. They have some good info in them, but leave many more questions unanswered. This is definitely the best of the bunch, especially since it talks about much more than just the drawing part of comic creation. Panel design, inking, lettering, etc. is all in here. The presentation and writing style is nice and it flows well.

The only real complaints I have about this book, were mentioned by one of the other reviewers, and I have to agree: 1) there is a LOT of wasted space in this book, where the print and/or pictures take up like half or 2/3 of the page. And 2) the type face is a little small. This wouldn't be such a problem if the books dimensions didn't make it a little unwieldy and big. So, the impressive page count isn't as impressive as I previously thought. If they fixed those two problems, I'd most likely give it 5 stars.

Problems aside, this is definitely not a book you want to pass on. Check it out and I'm sure you'll be pleased.

A Welcome Addition to Your Collection

I am a BIG fan of both Abel and Madden's work. I go to BOTH of their websites several times a month and "La Perdida" and "99 Ways To Tell A Story" are part of my collection of graphic novels.

This book is great for high school & college art teachers who want to teach sequential art to their classes. I believe the content is particularly suited for art majors that are interested in the finer points of visual narrative. And you can tailor your curriculum around the chapters if you so choose. If you want to use these for middle school kids I think simpler steps need to be added. I like the fact that people can form groups: "Nomads" OR go do it alone: "Ronins" and follow the lessons independently.

This book is NOT bad.

All the chapters and lessons are made to be studied in sequence and if you are an old timer to comic art you can easily skip to other chapters; which I did alot. A seasoned pro will probably go to the chapters that interest him/ her the most. One chapter that I REALLY like was called "Black Gold" the chapter on using and inking with a brush.

The other chapters on page layout, panel construction, character design,
facial features/ figure anatomy were VERY good.

My ONLY complaint was the layout of the book. My [web]comic artist collegues & I felt there was TOO much white space waisted on each page, the typeface was too small and that neon orange color used throughout the book distracting. It was hard to read and strained the eyes.

Plus being a webcomic artist myself I wanted to see MORE about using the computer for making comics. It covered scanning, re-sizing, adjusting your line art in PhotoShop, etc. The chapter on lettering was good; but they tended to downplay the use of COMPUTER LETTERING. They make a STRONG point in favor of HAND LETTERED comics; but it would have been nice if they address lettering on the computer as well.

My Suggestions:
A. Read the book cover to cover.
B. Do the Exercises. I am in a NOMAD group; plus I'm doing the RONIN thing as well.
C. Do the Homework.
D. Go back to your favorite chapters again and again.
E. Cross reference this with OTHER books on how to make comics.

This book is a welcome addition to any comic artist's arsenal of graphic narrative/ sequential art references. Use it along with books by Will Eisner & Scott McCloud and you'll be fully versed in the Language of Comic Art.

Pride & Prejudice: Hidden Lusts is an erotica novel adaptation of Jane Austen's classic Pride & Prejudice. All the characters are still here from Mr. Darcy, Elizabeth, and Mr. Bingley but you could have never imagined what was really going on in Netherifeld Park!
While Mrs. Bennett is determined to marry off one of her daughters to the good fortune of Mr. Bingley, Mr. Bennett is too busy behind his study doors with his favorite pictures to get involved.. Mr. Bennett is not the only one with an agenda of his own...Mr. Bingley and his sister both have their sites set on Mr. Darcy and will seemingly stop at nothing to get him. Lady Caroline is trying to bring her birch across anyone's backside that will oblige. Lydia is busy entertaining any officer she comes in contact with. Mr. Collins is known to go behind the bushes with any number of men to satisfy his need. All the while, Elizabeth is keeping herself busy and trying not to think of Mr. Darcy. Will anyone get what they so desire?!

My Thoughts
This adaptation what a refreshing change while keeping the classic storyline intact. Some of the scenes were a little much for my taste, but the plot remained solid and does justice to the genre. One of my favorite's is in chapter 19..."As Elizabeth lay in her bed in Lambton touching herself, so too did Darcy in Pemberley, their hands moving in unison at their loins....That their thoughts should be so closely united would have astonished them both, for as Elizabeth imagined that the fingers within the folds of her womanhood were those of Mr. Darcy, he imagined that those encircling his manhood belonged to her." This was my first novel by Mitzi Szereto, but definately not my last!

Sex with no Emotion

Dear Lord, where do I begin?

Okay, everyone knows that my not so secret vice is Pride and Prejudice adaptations. My favorites are ones where Darcy and Elizabeth show their love for each other (umm, get there grove on, have sex, do the nasty). However, nothing prepared me for this.

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE: HIDDEN LUSTS was crazy for coco puffs, completely lacking in reason and common sense. Yet, I was entertained. Granted my entertainment was more along the lines of "Dear Lord, no she didn't. Dear Lord, no this isn't happening. Dear Lord, this is the stupidest, craziest, thing I have ever read. Dear Lord, this is Pride and Prejudice, is nothing scared?" Yet, I couldn't stop reading.

The only way I can make my review coherent, or for you to understand what I mean is to go character by character and give you their sexual vices. This is full of spoilers, because I'm giving you each characters kinks.

BEWARE OF CONTINUING: THIS IS NOT FOR THE FAINT AT HEART. READ AT YOUR OWN RISK. LOL.

Mr. Bennet: He loves to enter woman in their 'hind quarters.' Since Mrs. Bennet refused to do this, he has discovered special drawings of woman with things sticking out of their hindquarters. When he is in the library ignoring his family he is getting himself off and bankrupting his family by paying for these pictures. He eventually gets tired of the pictures and carves out a piece of butternut squash to resemble a woman's internal parts (I'm trying to be delicate here, people!) where he sticks his wee wee. Of course, he is so exuberant that the squash is quickly destroyed, so he ends up banging Mrs. Hill.

Mrs. Bennet: Mrs. Bennet's love of officers back in the day resulted in Jane. Horrified by her husband's sexual impulses, she goes and buys potions from the gypsy's which makes her crazy for coco puffs and goggly-eyed.

Caroline Bingley: It was weird because the author had her addressed as Lady Caroline, with no reason why? Caroline loves to take a switch to men's booty's while the man is attending to her vajayjay with his mouth. Her best customer is Mr. Hurst, though she really wants Mr. Darcy but he keeps refusing her, which is driving her crazy.

Charles Bingley: He has a thing for Mr. Darcy. His favorite occupation is getting Darcy drunk and then while Darcy is passed out climbing in Darcy's bed and sucking on Darcy's weewee.
Lady Catherine: She is a Dom. When people don't do what she thinks they should do, she puts them in stockades and whips them while she's wearing some weird black get up.

Mr. Collins: Is gay. His favorite past time is running about sucking on other men's wee wees so vigorously that he knocks out his teeth.

Charlotte Lucas: Is gay. She wants Lizzy, but Lizzy is too clueless to realize it, despite Charlotte constantly feeling her up. She has others who she is involved with but can't get over her craving for Lizzy.
Mr. Wickham: He ended up running off with Georgiana. He used her money to open up several whorehouses and sent Georgiana to go and work in them, where Darcy found out and rescued her. He is in the militia recruiting. He tells Elizabeth that it's Darcy who was the owner and Darcy who sent Georgiana off to work in them.
Lydia Bennet: Likes to get off humping inanimated objects to her family's horror. She also humps officers, two and three at a time. She runs off with Wickham and when they are forced to marry, she has no problem working in Mr. Wickham's place of business.

Mary Bennet: Tries to attract Mr. Collins attention by stuffing apples down her dress. She also goes to the gypsy's for potions that has adverse effects.

Jane Bennet: Is in love with Mr. Bingley and doesn't understand why when she accepts his proposal that Mr. Bingley throws her down and enters her 'hind quarters' and calls out Darcy's name.

Elizabeth Bennet: Once she meets Mr. Wickham she starts finding stuff to insert inside her to get herself off. She doesn't seem to get that Lydia is a hussy despite all the noises she makes in her room and what she does to any piece of furniture she passes.

Fitzwilliam Darcy: When he proposes to Elizabeth the first time he takes out his wee wee and strokes it, which prompts Elizabeth to umm . . . kiss it until the desired result occurs. LOL. I couldn't read that scene without thinking of Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle doing the same thing.

Okay, can you understand why I thought PRIDE AND PREJUDICE: HIDDEN LUSTS was crazy for coco puffs?

Despite all the erotica (and this is erotica and not an erotic romance), and my horror/fascination at the way such beloved characters were protrayed, it was still flat for me. It's because there was a lack of emotion. It was all about the sex and not about any emotions between Darcy and Elizabeth. I couldn't feel the deep connection that Darcy and Elizabeth have with each other. So despite my google eyed read, I was in the end disappointed.

Don¨t waste your time or money! For the author to use sex and erotic scenes is fine by me, but to have Bingley get Darcy drunk to suck him off or Mary growing a beard... This book is RIDICULOUS!

This work is intended to provide a concise introduction to the spectral theory of Hilbert space operators. With an emphasis on detailed proofs and recent aspects of theory, it can serve as a modern textbook for a first graduate course in the subject. The coverage of topics is thorough, exploring various intricate points and hidden features often left untreated.

The book begins with a primer on Hilbert space theory, summarizing the basics required for the remainder of the book and establishing unified notation and terminology. After this, standard spectral results for (bounded linear) operators on Banach and Hilbert spaces, including the classical partition of the spectrum and spectral properties for specific classes of operators, are discussed. A study of the spectral theorem for normal operators follows, covering both the compact and the general case, and proving both versions of the theorem in full detail. This leads into an investigation of functional calculus for normal operators and Riesz functional calculus, which in turn is followed by Fredholm theory and compact perturbations of the spectrum, where a finer analysis of the spectrum is worked out. Here, further partitions involving the essential spectrum, including the Weyl and Browder spectra, are introduced. The final section of the book deals with Weyl's and Browder's theorems and provides a look at very recent results.

About the Author

Carlos Kubrusly was born in Rio de Janeiro in November 1947. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Warwick in 1976, held postdoctoral visiting research positions at the Universities of Warwick and Bonn, and has been a faculty member of Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro since 1972, where he became a full professor in 1988. Professor Kubrusly has published over 100 scientific articles in international journals and proceedings of international conferences. He has participated in approximately 40 scientific conferences, all with paper presentation, including plenary sections at the Toulouse IFAC Symposium in 1982 and at the Newport Beach SOTA Conference in 1998, and has also been a member of program committees of several international conferences.

Professor Kubrusly was the editor-in-chief of the journal Computational and Applied Mathematics (published by Birkhäuser from 1992 to 1998), and coeditor of the book Semigroups of Operators: Theory and Applications (Optimization Software, Los Angeles, 2002). He is the author of five books: "An Introduction to Models and Decompositions in Operator Theory", "Elements of Operator Theory", and "Hilbert Space Operators", all published by Birkhäuser in 1997, 2001, and 2003, respectively; "Measure Theory" by Academic Press in 2007; and recently, "The Elements of Operator Theory" (2nd enlarged and updated edition of "Elements of Operator Theory") published by Birkhäuser in 2011.

A great book about Spectral Theory

This book mainly concern is to investigate the spectrum of operators (i.e., continuous linear transformations) on Hilbert Spaces. Unbounded operators and results on Banach space are not the focus here. It introduces classical topics such as C*-Algebra, Functional Calculus and Fredholm Theory. Futhermore, Kubrusly made a brilliant exposition of the Spectral Theorem, one the cornerstone theorems on Operator Theory on Hilbert Spaces.

revision of a classic on time series modeling

In the early 1970s I was working on practical forecasting methods to apply to the U.S. Army supply depot workloads. Exponential smoothing was the commonly used "automatic" technique (once smoothing constants have been determined) that had great advantages over the informal methods used by the Army. Then someone told me that Box-Jenkins techniques were more general and powerful. I got a copy of the first edition published in 1970 and found that I could read and understand it even though I had little statistical training. I had a bachelors degree in mathematics. I got to appreciate the book even more when I took a short course from George Box, George Tiao and David Pack based on the book. I began to grasp some of the key ideas of stationary and nonstationary time series and learned about model selection, diagnostic checking and estimation. This started my interest in becoming a statistician and gave me the practical side of time series analysis first. I later specialized in it and got a Ph.D. in statistics.
Gwilym Jenkins died many years prior to this edition and Box's colleague Greogory Reinsel took on the task of helping to revise and update it.

It retains its original flavor. It is an applied book with many practical and illustrative examples. It concentrates on the three stages of time series analysis: modeling building, selection, estimation and diagnostic checking and how to iterate the process toward a good solution. The ARIMA time series models are what are considered. The theory of stationary and nonstationary time series is introduced to motivate interpretation of autocorrelation and partial autocorrelation in the model identification phase. Operator notation is introduced and used throughout the book to simplify equations. For me it helped simplify things and illuminate some concepts. But many readers found it difficult and confusing. the book is very systematic and practical. Many of the examples are real examples from Box's work in the chemical industry and his consulting during his career at the University of Wisconsin and also the consulting experience of Gwilym Jenkins in England.

The publishers and some amazon reviewers say that this edition is a major revision. The second edition published in 1976 was criticized for being essentially a reprint of the first. Although there is a new chapter 12 on intervention analysis and outlier detection it mainly is an expansion of ideas already discussed in the first edition. Theoretical results are kept aside in appendices as in previous editions.

This is not an up-to-date text on the theory of time series. It deals strictly with the time domain approach and does not include recent advances including nonlinear and bilinear models, models with non-Gaussian innovations and bootstrap or other resampling methods.

To get a balanced approach that includes the theory for frequency and time domain approaches the book by Shumway, the latest edition of the Brockwell and Davis text and the latest edition of Fuller's text are appropriate. For a graduate course I taught at UC Santa Barbara in 1981 I used the first edition of Fuller's book. Anderson provides a thorough account of the time domain theory. Excellent texts that specialize in the frequency domain approach are Bloomfield's second edition and the two volume book by Priestley. Brillinger's text is also worthwhile for those interested in spectral theory (frequency domain statistics).

Although there are many things that is text does not cover, it remains the classical text on a rich class of time domain methods that are still very practical. This is a text I bought for reference even though I still have the first edition.

Mathematical, Theoretical, Practical.

Box-Jenkins is THE definitive, foundational text in time series analysis. Mastery of this volume requires extensive graduate level understanding of mathematical statistics. While difficult even for intermediate statistical practitioners, this text is necessary for any professional who examines time series data and well worth the considerable effort to acquire mastery.

Disappointed

Based on the reviews here I had high hopes for learning the basics of ARIMA from this text. My fundamental beef with the book is not the content, but rather the presentation. I have taught portions of what's in the book for decades in the classroom on an undergraduate level. The author's writing style was such that even in those parts I could barely follow the presentation. I have bought literally hundreds of books from Amazon over the years they've been in business. This will be the first one I return. If you're trying to teach yourself this material, find a better aid. If you're buying this for a live class, don't skip class.

UPDATE: Because of the need to find useful sources for real world work, the search has continued. As a result, a very good resource has been found: Forecating Methods and Applications, Third Edn. by Makridakis. Of all the resources investigated, it presents the clearest explanations out there of the different forecasting methods, while still giving valuable insight. For a deeper look, Forecasting and Time Series: An Applied Approach by Bowerman & O'Connell has also proven useful. An older book, it is clearly written for the practitioner. And if you're using SAS to work through problems of this type: SAS/ETS Software: Applications Guide 1 is helpful.
