Steeped in a generations' old heritage of farm and ranch folk, Christine has trained and used herding dogs to work sheep and other livestock on her parents' ranch in Kiowa, CO.

not a how- to book

This book gives a general history of herding dogs and gives information on breeds. There is very little information on what herding dogs should do. It does not explain how to train them. If you are looking for a book about history and breeds it is great. But, if you want to know how to train your dog, keep looking.

About the Author
Linda has pursued her interest in first and second language pronunciation for over forty years. She has taught ESL students at Georgia Tech, international teaching assistants at Emory University, and graduate students in applied linguistics at Georgia State University in Atlanta. Her special interests are applying pronunciation research to practice and integrating pronunciation into the oral communication curriculum. She is the author of two pronunciation texts, Well Said and Well Said Intro (National Geographic Cengage) and the editor of the teacher resource volume Pronunciation Myths (University of Michigan Press).

This is a really useful book. I have taught English for nearly ten years, and am considering moving to teach in East Asia, where teaching pronunciation is quite important. I feel quite confident in other areas of teaching- vocabulary, grammar, and reading, and to a lesser extent, writing and listening. Pronunciation is something I have never actively taught before, at least not in depth. This book gave me a good base of knowledge about the field, confirming some impressions I had that were strong enough to create my attitudes about teaching pronunciation, but not strong enough that I would have consciously stated them. Impressions that were confirmed by this book: that pronunciation and how to teach it are given little attention in teacher training programs; that there are a lot of charlatans out there charging tons of money to teach pronunciation; that the topic of how to teach pronunciation is nowhere near settled (according to this book, as of 2014, there are only 13 empirical studies which measure the success of pronunciation teaching programs, covering a total of around 1700 learners- out of around 2 billion!). Far from just tearing down mistaken ideas about pronunciation, this book builds knowledge on the topic and suggests professional development resources, including the coursebooks that are most respected by the leading lights in pronunciation teaching.
One small warning- if you are totally new to teaching English as a second or foreign language, you might find the terminology used in the book A BIT difficult. This was a great read, and really opened my eyes to new resources. The bibliographies at the end of each chapter are also highly valuable, and the final chapter ties everything together into a comprehensible big picture. Hopefully, there will soon be a "Grammar Myths" book along the same lines!

Cassandra Zerek is a miner's daughter, but her father, Milo, had done his best to protect her from the seamy side of life often found in the mining towns. As a promise to his dear departed wife, Milo Zerek has seen to it that Cassie was educated only by nuns.

Now, a grown woman, Cassie intends to become a nun herself. She longs to help with the orphans and serve the Lord in any way that she can. Cassie believes that everyone has a good side, and that includes Luke Taggart, the richest man in town. Even though the man owns much of the town, including a few morally questionable establishments, Cassie catches him in an act of charity, and just knows that he has goodness hidden beneath his formidable exterior.

Luke Taggart is jaded, right down to his very core. Raised in poverty by a prostitute, he'd managed to raise himself to the status of the very rich and respected. But, he's bored with all that money can buy, bored with the 'loose women' with whom he usually keeps company, bored with gambling and drinking and carousing. Hell, he's even bored with making money, something that has him a bit worried, because his sole ambition had always been to make money. And then he meets Cassie Zerek, and decides that he has to have her - no matter the cost. Her innocence and pure sweetness captivate him, and he begins to see her as the one thing that may cure his ennui - if only for a couple of months.

After a few subtle rounds of trickery, Luke has Cassie ensconced firmly under his roof. Now, the only trick is to keep her there.

Author Catherine Anderson has crafted an endearing and exceedingly clever romance in SIMPLY LOVE. With characters so real that readers will laugh and cry with them as they journey towards their personal discovery of true love. Ms. Anderson captures the pureness and naiveté of her heroine perfectly. Conversely, Anderson also manages to convey the sheer depravity of the very rich and the seamy side of prostitution. This book is a study in contradictions, blended seamlessly by the author's skill with the written word, at times so sweetly innocent that readers want to weep, then so deeply sensual that they'll be fanning themselves to cool off.

SIMPLY LOVE is one of those rare finds that every reader searches for: a keeper. So engrossing that it'll have you turning pages until the very end, and then sighing for more. Personally, I can't wait to see more from this very talented author!

Absolutely wonderful!

I loved this book!! What more can I say? This book made me laugh until tears came to my eyes, this book made me cry and most importantly, this book made me feel incredibly warm and fuzzy and totally sorry that I finished it off so quickly!
Luke and Cassandra are wonderful characters - although to be perfectly honest, Cassandra was a little too naive for my taste - really - could one woman - ignorant to the worldly ways of men or not - be so ignorant to Luke's blatant intentions?
I really liked Luke - sure he was mean and lying and manipulative, but deep down he was wonderful and came to his senses before the love of his life left him.
This book had me sighing and wishing for that soul-rending absolute love that they had for each other.
A real good read... worth every cent!

Awful leading man. And I do mean awful!

I read the reviews for this book which were on Amazon at the time I purchased it and most seemed to be positive. I had never read any other book by Catherine Anderson so I figured I would give this a try. Somehow it got pushed aside and I lost track of it for over a year. In the meantime I read her short story SHOTGUN BRIDE in the anthology Tall, Dark and Dangerous and absolutely loved it. I went searching among my book stacks for this book. What a huge disappointment.

Luke, our hero, was an awful character. Can I just tell you how awful? He was arrogant, insincere, conceited, devious, callous, mean spirited and a thoroughly rotten fellow. I don't care how awful his childhood was, this author was not able to redeem this man enough for me to even begin to like him. He was willing to do any mean and dirty trick to force a young girl to become his mistress. He had absolutely no regard for what it might do to her spiritually, mentally or physically. What a thoroughly rotten, dirty dog. And it wasn't just part of the way through the book, it was up until the next-to-last page. Even though they got married he didn't admit that he loved her until page 396. Then he tried to use money to keep her with him. Once again, yes he had a traumatic childhood, but he just came across as totally self indulgent and only interested in what he wanted.

This book is seriously over-long. It was just the same song, same words, over and over and over. Boring, unwaveringly boring. The author put in short examples of Luke being kind but they never managed to divert me from his more usual self-centered behavior.

Cassandra was the type of heroine who seemed to float through the world on a cloud of purity which shielded her from all of life's realities. She was 18 (and appeared to have the maturity level of a 13 year old most of the time) and wanted to be a nun. This author never convinced me that she had any personality. Her "goodness" was all that protected her from the big bad man. Now I'm not saying that couldn't be true, but it sure did get boring when it went on for 396 pages.

In case you haven't already guessed, I didn't like this book. These characters were the same throughout the book. No growth, no change, nothing to make me like her or him. Sometimes I get tired of heroines with so much "spunk" they couldn't possibly be real people. In this case Cassie needed that "spunk". And she needed to receive it in an emergency transplant, at that. Luke, well, he would have been a more pleasant character if he had thought more often with his brain instead of relying only on what another part of his anatomy wanted.

The virtues of clear thinking

It seems like a straightforward question: Why aren't we doing what we know we should be doing? The answer to this question, it would seem, should be both simple and complex; this book's main virtue is that it provides both. Their unblinking examinations of so many obvious and ridiculous screw-ups and mess-ups of all kinds makes the simple foolishness of it all so completely apparent (this collection of examples alone is well worth the cost of admission). But then again (thankfully), they don't oversimplify their discussion of the full range of the "human and organizational frailties" that we've all learned to know and love, and that are at the source of these kinds of problems.
If you want a hand-holding spoon-feeding checklist, look elsewhere. The authors show specifically why this kind of "checklist" attitude is a BIG part of the problem (notice how the summaries they provide at the end of each section pull together their main points nicely without oversimplifying them). However if you're looking for a guide to help you to actually think your way through these kinds of problems, as they beset you in your organizational life (and possibly in your personal life), then this is a definite "must read."
For these reasons (and both because of and in spite of its critique of MBA education practices), this book will become definite required reading in our core management course.

The main premise of this book as the authors best summarize it is: "Why knowledge of what needs to be done frequently fails to result in action or behavior consistent with that knowledge. We came to call this the knowing-doing problem - the challenge of turning knowledge about how to enhance organizational performance into actions consistent with that knowledge. This book presents what we learned about the factors that contribute to the knowledge doing gap and why and how some organizations are more successful than others in implementing their knowledge."

The book then analyzes the reasons and causes of this gap through numerous examples and presents eight main recommendations: "Eight Guidelines for Action: 1) Why before How: Philosophy Is Important 2) Knowing Comes from Doing and Teaching Others How. 3) Action Counts More Than Elegant Plans and Concepts. 4) There Is No Doing without Mistakes. What Is the Company's Response? 5) Fear Fosters Knowing-Doing Gaps, So Drive Out Fear. 6) Beware of False Analogies: Fight the Competition, Not Each Other. 7) Measure What Matters and What Can Help Turn Knowledge into Action. 8) What Leaders Do, How They Spend Their Time and How They Allocate Resources, Matters."

A very applicable, educational and action oriented book. One that echoes the fundamentals of execution and its importance as the ultimate benchmark of success. A must read in the area of management!

1- "...although knowledge creation, benchmarking, and knowledge management may be important, transforming knowledge into organization action is at least as important to organizational success."

2- "Attempting to copy just what is done - the explicit practices and policies - without holding the underlying philosophies at once a more difficult task and an approach that is less likely to be successful."

3- "Talk is also valued because, as noted earlier, the quantity and "quality" of talk can be assessed immediately, but the quality of leadership or management capability, the ability to get things done, can be assessed only with greater time lag."

4- "It is possible, albeit difficult, to build strong cultures founded on principles and philosophy that can also innovate and change. But doing so requires much thought and attention. Otherwise, firms are readily trapped by their history, even if, or particularly if, that history has many positive elements in it, as Saturn's does."

5- "Conversely, fear is an enemy of the abilitiy to question the past or break free from precedent."

6- "It is clear to us that merely knowing what measurement practices should be used does not, by itself, cause leaders to implement measures that produce intelligent, mindful, learning behavior rather than the reverse."

7- "In each of the instances in which effective measurement practices were used, knowing what to do, why it needed to be done, and having the persistence and courage to do it helped leaders turn knowledge about how to enhance performance into organizational action."

8- "As Dean Tjosvold, a researcher and writer on the subject of competition and cooperation, noted, "Competition stimulates, excites, and is useful in some circumstance, but those situations do not occur frequently in organizations, and the widespread use of competition cannot be justified.""

A must read...

There are not enough stars on this page to rate this book by James Jordan high enough. I've never met anyone who had the perfect father...and that's not to condemn fathers, but to speak truth. There are no perfect fathers, because there are no perfect fathers to train their young men to be fathers...or to love their daughters in a way that will ensure they marry good men who will become good fathers. The lack of a father...and earthly father...leaves a gaping hole in our hearts that can only be filled by one Person. In this book, James Jordan introduces us to him in a way that draws us into a wonderful relationship. And James' writing style is simple, yet it touches places in our soul. Again, I cannot recommend this book enough. Get it, read it, feel it...and then pass it along to someone else. Thank you, James, for your heart for the Father...and for his children...

An amazing resource!

James Jordan's new book entitled 'Sonship' is a helpful resource for those who are interested in growing in their relationship with their Heavenly Father. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down until I read it cover to cover. I highly recommend it and I believe that those who read it with an open heart will discover many wonderful nuggets of biblically based revelation that will encourage them to go deeper into the Fatherheart of God. I believe this book will be a huge blessing to all who read it.
