“One of the greatest strengths of this book is the author’s tone and style. He is very down-to-earth and encouraging . . . you can tell that Madden is an experienced teacher because he anticipates common questions and problems . . . he bridges personal response to writing a critical essay quite well.”

Professor Daniel Schierenbeck - University of Central Missouri

“The writing coverage is this text’s strongest element. From the process-based writing at the outset to the prompts and questions at the end of each reading, the book gives instructors more than sufficient material to work with and gives students a very healthy, well-rounded set of tools and ideas to create critical essays.  The student essays are very good . .  grounded enough and real enough that students can connect with them and use them as guides.”

Text Review
By JM Falinski
This is an excellent text for students interested in understanding literature through reading, writing and responding. The book is written in a conversational voice making it user-friendly for all readers. The literary selections represent a wide range of works from classical to contemporary in various genres. This book is a "keeper" for students even after the course is over because of the high quality of the selections, the strong organization of the chapters and the accessibility of the content.

Excellent
By Marie G. Michaud
I have been using this textbook for two years in a college course and I love it. What I like the most about it is that my students love it. I always get positive feedback from them when I ask them to write a reflection after reading chapters 1 through 5 in this textbook. They find the content easy to read and I find that they gain a new perspective about the value of literature and how to approach it. They also find the checklists for writing an essay to be a great tool.

It is especially beneficial to teachers who value multicultural education. There is something for everyone regardless of ethnicitiy, sexual orientation, and socio-economic background. I find that I can easily change the texts I cover each semester depending on the interests and make-up of my classroom. There is literally something for everyone! I love this text.

Great book for the classroom!
By Richard A. Courage
I have taught from earlier editions of Frank Madden's Exploring Literature and always found it a great teaching text. It serves up a rich array of readings that balances accessibility and challenge while introducing students to many of the world's finest writers. The poems, plays, stories, and essays are embedded in an ongoing conversation with the reader that begins, wisely, by addressing the personal intellectual frameworks that non-English-majors typically rely on to make sense of or find pleasure in literary texts. Onto this experiential, student-centered base, Madden builds an increasingly complex set of reading/writing practices and concepts, illustrated by his own students' work. I'm glad to see my favorite features and sections retained in this new edition: portraits of the authors, an illustration of different ways to annotate a poem (exploratory and analytical), a case study on aesthetic contexts pairing full-color images of paintings with poems that allude to them, and a case study on writers of the Harlem Renaissance. My students generally appreciate what this book offers, and I'm looking forward to using the fifth edition in an introductory literature course.

Dark Days for Steve Canyon
By Stephen Vincent Kempton
Volume 5 of Steve Canyon brings us another two years of Steve Canyon from 1955 and 1956. The Dailies are printed in crisp black and white and the Sundays in lush full color. Truly the strip has never looked better.

Milton Caniff a master from the chiaroscuro school of art is at the top of his game here. After eight years of doing Steve Canyon, it was a bonafide success and Caniff felt confident enough to tell some very experimental and unique stories here.

The first story winds up a stoy-line introduced in the last volume with General Index and his wife with a shaddy past Delta. Pipper the Piper readers should be aware was based on John F. Kennedy.

The next story-line reintroduces Doe Redwood while Reed Kimberly who resembles Terry Lee (from Terry and the Pirates) enjoys a romance with a young lady. Things end very darkly for Doe. But this story is not nearly as dark as the next one.

The next story is my absolute favorite of the volume and a total gut-wrencher. It follows Summer Smith now Summer Olsen as she is trying to escape the evil clutches of the Villainess Copper Calhoon. Copper has her under watch and seems determined to wreck her life and bring her back under her control. Summer experiences a brief taste of happiness in the form of a budding romance. In the meantime Steve plays almost a cameo role in the storyline. We know Canyon is on a path to see Summer. When he finally meets Summer he completely destroys her life. This by far is one Caniff's best.

Caniff must of realized how dark this story was because next he does a 180 and the strip reintroduces Happy Easter and his troop of Hooligans. This starts out as a series of gag and humor strips mostly until "the Scarlet Princess" story-line emerges. This story is about actress Savannah Gay getting Happy to finance her next movie. Besides being beautiful Savannah really has no redeeming qualities, so I found Steve and her romance kind of strange.

Next we go very dark place once again for the story involving young General Shanty Town. This is a very realistic and heart breaking story which packs an wallop. The unrequited love story is also very well told.

Finally we close out the volume with the Introduction of Steve's cousin Poteet Canyon. Poteet would become a very integral part of the strip for the next three decades so it is fascinating to see her origins.

Bruce Canwell does an excellent job once again with his Introduction. He not only sets the stage letting you know what was going on during these years but gives you insights to the makings of the stories featured here.

I can not praise high enough the quality of this book from Dean Mullaney and The Library Of American Comics. It is a delight and made to be treasured and read over and over.

My Highest Recommendation.

The 5th volume of this great, classic strip
By Michael R. Brown
This is volume 5 of the complete reprinting of Steve Canyon, covering 1955 to 1956 and subtitled "Taps for 'Shanty' Town". KSP, the first publisher which tried to do a complete reprinting, did most of these strips in 3 volumes, titled "In Formosa's Dire Straits", "The Scarlet Princess", and "Taps for 'Shanty' Town". We see the return of some characters, the continuation of the stories of others, and the introduction of another major character to the strip.

We start off with the conclusion of the storyline from the last volume, which has Colonel Index (who Canyon dealt with in a prior volume) being pressured by his wife Delta (a confidence woman whom Steve first meet in the first volume) to pilot a daring glider rescue in an attempt to get a promotion to a brigadier general. But things don't go as some planned, especially for Delta!

The next storyline ("In Formosa's Dire Straits") has Canyon return to the Far East, this time to protect a technical expert going to Formosa (Taiwan). It's Doe Redwood (from volume 2). Others from the past reappear. The Halls, whom Steve had meet in the previous volume, are also in Formosa, as Mr. Hall is now the US Consul there. Doe is targeted by Red agents, who grab Holly Hall by mistake. In rescuing her, Doe is injured. Another reappearance is Reed Kimberly, who was kind of Terry to Canyon's Pat Ryan back in volume 1 and 2. He is now a young Marine who winds up protecting Holly Hall and a romance is budding. But things go awry when Reed is accused of smuggling drugs.

We then shift to seeing how Summer Olsen is doing. As noted in the last volume, she has quit working for Copper Calhoun. She tries to get work, only to have Copper engineering her getting fired, as a way to force Summer to return to work for her. Strangely, she runs into the actor that Copper had hired previously to breakup Steve and Summer (volume 4), and the two fall in love and are about to get married. But Steve returns and puts the kabosh on this, and not in the way you'd expect. Summer's husband, Ollie (volume 2), has been found alive but incapacitated. Summer decides to care for him, but to do so, she has to return to work for Copper.

We then start the next storyline ("The Scarlet Princess") with the return of Happy Easter and his Chinese Hooligans, whom the State Department has brought back to the US to prevent them from causing an international incident. Happy is now richer, as uranium has been found on his land. He soon gets pulled into backing a Hollywood picture ("The Scarlet Princess"). and Steve is pulled in as Air Force liaison. Due to issues, he even steps into the film himself to cover for one of the main actors.

The next storyline ("Taps for 'Shanty' Town") is considered a classic. Written as a tribute to a real Air Force General, General "Casey" Vincent, who was also the model of a character in "Terry and the Pirates", Gen Town calls in Steve and other bachelor Air Force veterans of WWII to test out a dangerous new scheme of his. But over working and a weak heart kills him. We also get the return of another minor character in this storyline, but I'll let the reader find out more.

With the wrap up of that storyline, we get introduced to a new character to the strip: Steve's heretofore unknown cousin, Poteet Canyon, a rambunctious teen from Texas. While their relationship is not clear (not sure if this is ever resolved), Canyon does make her his ward. (not sure how long this runs, as I'm only aware of a couple of more years). Poteet goes along on Steve's next story, with him heading to an old airbase being expanded: Big Thunder. In someways this is similar to another story of a similar base Steve works to setup from a prior volume. The base has issues, as a new electronics plant is going up, offering high salaries, which means the base has problem getting labor, and everyone is raising their prices on the military personnel. Also, the mayor is not a supporter, so Steve has his work cut out for him.

The volume wraps up with an interlude where Steve has to decide what he will do, as with the success of "The Scarlet Princess", Hollywood is calling. But he will stay in the Air Force.

I look forward to the next volume, though I know most of the storylines as they were reprinted in the last 2 of KSP's Steve Canyon volumes. It will also be the last volume that has material I have read previously.

Item was as described. It is used but in like new condition. My prof decided to use a different text book at the last minute, but this one was only about $15 so it was not a huge loss. It still has a lot of usable information.

Very Good Book For Aspiring ARM C Programmer
    By Dave
This is a great book for someone with prior exposure to programming that is self motivated and a few spare $$$ to learn how to program the ARM 7 processor. Note, however, that there is some assembly required (pun intended) especially in chapters 8 and beyond. This is due to the pace that open source software moves and and required the reader to tweek makefiles and one setting or two in Eclipse, but in a minor way.

The book starts of with an overview of C programming with all code running on a Windows XP PC using the DJGPP compiler. The author proves a download making the installation of all PC software a piece of cake and, provides detailed instruction s if you want to understand the specifics. By they way, by "overview of C programming", I mean a quick introduction and examples of how to use the features required to work all examples in the book, and then a bit more. The PC is used in the beginning to insure the reader has mastered enough of the C programming language to advance on to the Eclipse and the embeded environment and not get bogged down learning C, Eclipse, and the ARM at once. After reading the book, working the exercises, and running the code you will not be a C expert but you will have enoough exposure to C to advance to, for example, K&R or other advanced C book. If you are already experience in C, the first 8 chapters can be glossed over as I found.

Beginning with chapter 8, the author does a great job of guiding the reader through installing YAGARTO (Yet Another Gnu ARm TOol Set); that is, the GCC compiler and tools for working with GCC on Windows (Windows XP is probably the best environment to use with this book although I am running Windows XP as a virtual machine on a Windows 7 64-bit machine and working with the hardware with no problems). The author uses ATMEL's ATSAM7S256K-EK evaluation board (approx $130) as a learning platform. The author mentions (almost too many times) that you can use other hardware but warns the reader your are on your own with some bits of advice. In short, if you by this book and are new to ARM, the author's choice makes sense.

The projects are simple, and do not require an advance degree in Electrical Engineering to underatand. They are perfect for getting the basics down. Now, the reason I said some assembly required is that the makefiles are geared towards an earlier distribution of the YAGARTO tool set, but the modifications are minor. The book uses a version of Eclipse that is earlier than what is available today. It took me a few minutes to fix the makefiles, and to fix a single issue with the latest version of Eclipse (the specification of the compiler is now arm-none-eabi- and not arm-elf-gcc- . It is unfortunate that the author (and Elektor Magazine) do not provide an eratta or user form to communicate updates. However, with a little Googleing, the problems can be solved. A novice to Eclipse will probably experience frustration which is why a user form or eratta would be helpful.

On a final note, one issue I did have with this book is that in the final chapters the author adds a driver for the serial port. That sounds good, but he used a feature of the C language that, as far as I can tell, it in the C99 standard in section 6.2.7 "Compatible type and composite type" that are implemented in later releases of the GCC compiler, but is a "bleeding edge" feature. This should not be an issue if the author had warned the reader that there may be warnings, but didn't. The code still compiles, and isn't a show-stopper, but using such advanced warning-prone code in a basic book's source code seemed to me to be wrong. That's no reason to ding the author as the book accomplishes it stated objective. Besides, in my research of this issue, I learnt about the C99 standard, and that the driver code is from a project the author is involved in regarding an open source PLC controller, so I did learn from the experience. Not sure why the author didn't publish his web site in the book. I will respect this and not include it here.

Overall, I was very happy with the book although the first 7 chapters were too basic for me. The author clearly the books stated objectives which is why it would be unfair to berate the author for my specific circumstance.

    best book fro beginners
    By single male
I have been struggling to learn some basic embedded C programming in my spare time, but it does not appear to be a subject that lends it self to occasional short intervals of reading. That is, it seems to be necessary to devote large blocks of time to study for this subject. I have tried most of the other recommended beginners books you will see on Amazon, but most of them go too fast for someone who has never done any programming.

But with this book, I think I am starting to pick it up now. The first half of the book is nothing but basic C programming. You do not need to buy the EVB for this portion fo the book, all the initial examples use PC-based C code. He has many of the same examples they use in other books, but he goes into more details in explaining each line of code.

His recommended EVB uses an ARM processor. At first glance, this may seem advanced for a beginners book, but an ARM processor has a feature called a JTAG port, which makes in-circuit debugging and simulation easier. Also, ARM based code should be more portable from one brand of processor to the other.

So if you have been struggling to learn some C programming, and you do not have too much time to spare, I would highly recommend this book, especially if your goal is to do embedded programming.

This book has good contents for beginners but with really dated tools
    By Lin Zhao
First book that I will return to Amazon over 10 years.

This book has good contents for beginners but with really dated tools. For a beginner in C and embedded systems, he/she could be confused by installing and configuring the tools and compiling the examples.

    1. C compiler for PC programs: the author used DJGPP as the C compiler which can be only used in 32-bit Windows system. You have to either have an old PC with 32-bit Windows or install Windows XP mode in Windows 8.

    2. GNU tools and toolchain: the YAGARTO tools which is introduce in 8.3.1 cannot be found on internet anymore. You have to used the one from emb4fun. You can also find the YAGARTO GNU ARM toolchain in there. Okay, so far so good...

    3. Makefile: you have to make more changes to the makefile than the author mentioned in 8.4.5. You have to replace all the 'arm-self' to 'arm-none-eabi' in the makefile if you use the tools and toolchain from emb4fun.

I would suggest the author update this book to another edition. Instead of using DJGPP, he should use a free compiler that supports 64-bit Windows. For example, MinGW has both 32-bit and 64-bit versions.
