Nice late intermediate arrangements

These arrangements sound fresh but aren't too difficult to learn. On religious classics such as Ave Maria, Gesu Bambino, We Three Kings and Mary Did You Know? the left hand is in triplet or eighth-note arpeggios that span a tenth to a thirteenth and the right hand melody is often stated in chords, thirds or sixths so the overall sound is nice and thick.

Several pieces offer moderately jazzy chord substitutions and can be played straight or swing: Frosty the Snowman, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, Home for the Holidays. A couple are pop: Believe from Polar Express, Grown-Up Christmas List. All of these include flashy little fills, key changes and enough technical heft so they sound convincing.

It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year is a neat little jazz waltz if you kick the tempo up a notch and add just a little more action to the syncopated chords.

Only one throw-a-way (in my opinion): We Three Kings.... It just isn't as interesting as the rest.

difficult but worth it

The non-sacred songs are very much what you'd expect to hear for cocktail music, with conventional chords and all the fills and fancies typical of the genre. Mr. Coates also included more up-to-date sacred songs like "Birth of a King" and "Mary Did You Know", which have been around long enough to be recognized by many listeners. Mr. Coates does the expected extremely well, and these will be a valued part of your repertoire. Be aware that these are at least "early advanced" in difficulty and will require practice for almost anybody, but students will learn a lot from them.

About the Author
ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Dan F. Hahn is a Visiting Professor in the Department of Culture and Communication at New York University. Educated at Kansas State University (B.S.), the University of Kansas (M.A.), and the University of Arizona (Ph.D.), he is the author of more than two hundred articles, book chapters, and convention papers exploring aspects of political communication. He also is coauthor of two books, Presidential Communication: Description and Analysis (with Robert E. Denton, Jr.) and Listening for a President: A Citizen’s Campaign Methodology (with Ruth Gonchar Brennan).

Dr. Hahn has chaired the departments of communication at Queens College and Florida Atlantic University. He has served as president of the Eastern Communication Association. His recent honors include the National Speakers Association’s Outstanding Professor Award (1994), the Florida Communication Association’s Scholar of the Year Award (1995), selection for Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers (1996), the Eastern Communication Association’s Distinguished Service Award for lifetime contributions to the field (1996), and election as an Eastern Communication Association Research Fellow (1996) and Teaching Fellow (1997).

HONORS

The Eastern Communication Association awarded Dr. Hahn the Everett Lee Hunt Award for the first edition of Political Communication: Rhetoric, Government, and Citizens.

The Rhetoric of Politics

I bought this book 8 years ago for a communications course, and am absolutely amazed at how clearly it linked political rhetoric in spreading propaganda and misinformation. The author does an excellent job in expounding how political communication is used positively and negatively in the media, specifically in advertisements and speeches. It even explains how misinformation can be utilized in planting ideas. A necessity for political writers, and a must read for an average participant of politics who wants to understand exactly what's being said.

Luke Him Sau/Lu Qianshou (1904–1991) is best known internationally and in China as the architect of the iconic Bank of China Headquarters in Shanghai. This book satiates this by providing a highly engaging and visual account of China’s 20th-century architecture through the lens of one of the country’s most distinguished yet overlooked designers. It features over 250 new colour photographs by Edward Denison of Luke’s buildings and original archive material.

The book charts Luke’s life and work, commencing with his childhood in colonial Hong Kong and his apprenticeship with a British architectural firm before focusing on his education at the Architectural Association (1927–30). In London, Luke was offered the post of Head of the Architecture Department at the newly established Bank of China, where IM Pei’s father was a senior figure. Luke spent the next seven years in the inimitable city of Shanghai designing buildings all over China for the Bank before the Japanese invasion in 1937 forced him, and countless others, to flee to the proxy wartime capital of Chongqing. In 1945 he returned to Shanghai where he formed a partnership with four other Chinese graduates of UK universities; but civil war (between the Communists and Nationalists) once again caused him and others to uproot in 1949. Initially intent on fleeing with the Nationalists to Taiwan, Luke was almost convinced to stay in Communist China but decided finally to move to Hong Kong. There, for the third time in his life, he had to establish his career all over again. Despite many challenges, he eventually prospered, becoming a pioneer in the design of private residences, schools, hospitals, chapels and public housing.

A fascinating study of an "unknown" talent in architecture

With the book "Luke Him Sau: China's Missing Modern," author Edward Dennison gives the reader more than just a biography of an important but relatively unknown Chinese architect. Its pages also fit Luke Him Sau into the panorama of China's twentieth-century evolution from a populous but lesser nation, to a totalitarian state, to whatever it became late in the century. All of this is seen through the experiences of the book's central figure, Luke. His life was all the more remarkable given the conditions in which he and his family often had to live.

Luke is part of China's "missing" modern because his major contributions to the development of architecture in China were "erased from history," intentionally ignored for many decades because of his decision to leave China after takeover of the country by the Communists.

His life was profoundly influenced by the complicated and dynamic changes taking place, especially in China, during the first half of the 20th century. Born in the British colony of Hong Kong, Luke was the son of a successful businessman with a high regard for classical education. When Luke began his study of architecture, it was regarded as a lower and included branch of engineering. He received his architectural training from Western sources, first as an apprentice with a British architectural firm and then through further study in London at the Architectural Association. His years in London coincided with the development of modernism in architecture in the Western world.

As he was finishing his training in London, at 25 years of age, he was offered the opportunity to head the newly formed architectural department of the Bank of China. He produced designs for numerous branch banks and associated structures. His most well-known project is arguably the Bank of China Headquarters in Shanghai.

Luke was a pragmatic and practical architect, able to combine the best features of Eastern and Western design. Much of his work served public needs, from banks and other commercial buildings to high density housing.

A plethora of photographs of Luke's completed projects are in the book, as well as many floor plans. It also works as a coffee-table book -- it's almost as interesting to look through as to read.

A minor quibble is that it would have been useful to have some maps included, particularly in the first chapter which provides historical context to China's entry into the 20th century. Also, the Chinese names get a bit confusing at times, but there's no solution to that.

Interesting take on a biography...

When I first picked up this book, I wasn't sure if it was a coffee table book, a biography, or something else. However, I found that the book is a very effective visual biography - plenty of photos enmeshed within the work itself as opposed to a "traditional" biography where the images are all on center pages.

I really like the way that the author integrates the images with the subject material; it lends itself to easy absorption and understanding of the presentation, and is a very effective tool.

The only challenge I had with the work was that I am totally unfamiliar with Chinese names, and therefore I struggled, but for someone that understands more about Chinese history & is relatively familiar with the naming conventions & structures, this book will indeed be a wonderful addition to the history on this period.

I greatly enjoyed the work, and I would heartily recommend it to anyone interested in the architectural history of the era and the region. It's a fascinating work and a great addition to the historical literature on the topic.

more a biography than a showcase of Sau's architecture

This is an interesting book, and provides insightful background into a tumultuous period of time, and its impact on Chinese architects (including Sau, whose life is less "representative" of such architects, and more "illustrates how tumultuous and unique everyone's paths were at that point in time").

That said, I personally had been hoping for many pictures of Sau's buildings, and although many of those were included, this picture is definitely more of a biography than a coffee-table-architecture-inspiration book. It has about as much text as pictures (maybe 50% of each), and the pictures it DOES include are often images of Sau at various phases of his life, or places he stayed / places he visited / pictures of his family, rather than "buildings he designed." The latter are included, but maybe... 20%(?) of the pictures, so they're in there, but not the primary focus.

This book will benefit students of history and/or architecture more than people just looking for a coffee-table book of pretty or interesting buildings.

Very Cognitive... Must Read....

This book should be a MUST READ for everyone irrespective of religion, age, cast etc. The author is simply analyzing different holy texts and asking some 'uncomfortable', but logical questions.

After reading this book, I have not turned atheist (which is a very common fear among people who are against such books). Rather it has given me an opportunity to revisit my belief system.

Mr Shourie ---- during retrospection a question came to my mind --- Can we say that your son has to suffer throughout his life so that you could write such a book and help others?

Evelyn Waugh (1903-1966), whom Time called "one of the century's great masters of English prose," wrote several widely acclaimed novels as well as volumes of biography, memoir, travel writing, and journalism. Most autobiographical........

The Ordeal of Gilbert Pinfold is generally regarded as Waugh's most autobiographical novel, and is worth a read on that count alone, even had it not also been a succinct and typically well-wrought humorous Waugh masterpiece. It may well be his funniest novel. As critic Malcolm Muggeridge comments it is".....a revelation of Waugh's inward conflicts and distresses which no biographer can hope to equal in poignancy and truth."

As Waugh notes on page 5 "....most men harbour the germs of one or two books only; all else is professional trickery of which the most daemonic of the masters - Dickenson and Balzac even - were flagrantly guilty." In his 50s Waugh, with a numerous family, and beset by the high taxation typical of post-war Britain that had reduced
many of his formerly prosperous middle-class neighbors to penury, has become an insomniac. Desperate for the sweet release of sleep, as well as the clarity of mind that only a good night of rest can provide, he turns to prescription sleeping aids. Naturally, what worked at first became less effective over time. He obtained the same substance from other physicians, unbeknownst to any of the physicians. He mixed the sleeping draught (a strong barbiturate) with alcohol, and soon his wife was extremely worried about him. To pacify her, and also because he has even become somewhat concerned, he agrees to a sea voyage where he will have no need of the sleeping draught, as he has always enjoyed good sleep at sea.

Whether because he is going cold turkey from the barbiturates, or due to lack of sleep, or both, he begins to hallucinate, and invents reasonable, if quite hilarious, delusions to explain the hallucinations. Many of us would be horrified by a psychotic experience, and not at all inclined to admit it........NOT Waugh. He was apparently quite amused, relieved at another offering from the well-springs of creativity, and hurried home to write Pinfold.

Evelyn Waugh was probably one of the first "Targeted Individuals"

Evelyn Waugh was probably one of the first "Targeted Individuals". His experience, told through the character of Pinfold, was a much gentler and sophisticated version of what targeted individuals experience on a continual basis in the 21st century. It is difficult to believe that Britain and the United States had such sophisticated psychotronic technology so soon after the end of World War Two, but it's true and Evelyn Waugh was probably one of the first subjects to be on the receiving end of a "targeting" experiment. See Sharon Weinberger's article "Mind Games" which appeared in the January 14th 2007 Washington Post for the reference to Evelyn Waugh and targeted individuals.

Jon Emm got his BA from The George Washington University. He studied acting at The Bennett Theatre Lab in San Francisco, and spent over 10 years in Hollywood. Jon has written short stories, plays, and many scenes and monologues for actors. His book, "48 Monologues for Kids and How to Master Them" is the first in a series under, "The Acting Coach Approach." He now resides in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Very Good Book For Kids Starting Out

I got this book for my 9 year old daughter who is in the process of pursuing an acting career. We found that there were lots of monologues for her to choose from for her age group. The additional instructions and coaching provided within each monologue was very helpful. I would have given it 5 stars if there were just a few more monologues with a lot more emotions in them. I think we only came across 2 or 3 that was intended to display an emotional feel. Aside from that, this is one of the better ones I've come across that is most current and helpful.

Some Great Choices!

My daughter is a 15 year old actress and has been fortunate to work one on one with Lana Young! She needed a fresh/new monologue for an audition for a movie so we bought this book. It has some really good monologues for all kids of all ages. Lana even helped us go through and determine which ones may be best for a 15 year old female. and I love this book because it's easy to use

My 11 year old son is an actor, and I love this book because it's easy to use, and there are some great choices for him when he has auditions or workshops that require a monologue. Jon is funny and seems to really get how kids think.

About the Author
Bruce A. Wilson has an international reputation as a leader in Dimensional Management and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GDandT). He is certified by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) as a Senior Level Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing Professional. He has more than 20 years participation in ASME subcommittee Y14.5 standards development, and for more than 14 years served as the leader of the positional tolerances section of the standard. His consulting experience includes teaching GDandT in Europe and the United States. He has industrial and academic experiences that provide the expertise and practical knowledge necessary to write a dimensioning and tolerancing text that is technically correct and applicable to today's industrial needs. Industrial experience includes responsibilities ranging from design engineer to program manager and industrial consultant. He is recognized as a Technical Fellow in The Boeing Company. Design engineering experience includes mechanical, precision mechanisms, electromechanical, optics packaging, electronics packaging, pneumatics, and aircraft structures. Experience has taken place in companies ranging from 20 to 150,000 employees. Extensive design experience has provided a thorough exposure to dimensioning and tolerancing requirements as they apply to various applications. He is an industrial leader in the discipline of dimensional management. He has led teams to establish product requirements, complete three dimensional variation analysis, apply tolerances to detail parts and assemblies, communicate requirements to production, and implement quality assurance measures related to dimensional variation. His variation analyses and assembly concepts have resulted in product cost savings greater than 50% and elimination of assembly tooling costs for major aircraft structure. The processes he explored are now implemented widely. Mr. Wilson is an industrial leader and has multiple United States patents for calculation methods used to assess variation effects. Mr. Wilson has contributed to the development of national and international standards since 1986 through his participation and membership on the ASME Y14.5 subcommittee. He has served as a member of the ASME Y14, Y14.1, Y14.2, Y14.3, and Y14.5 subcommittees. He has participated in United States technical advisory groups for ISO dimensioning standards. Training and consulting experience includes curriculum development, teaching, management of training programs and instructor development. Areas of concentration include Dimensioning and Tolerancing for engineering and manufacturing, Computer-Aided Design, Dimensional Management, and New Designer Training. Training programs have been taught to design engineers, manufacturing engineers, industrial engineers, machinists, inspectors, supplier quality managers, and managers.
