Seidl (Early Spring) transcends wrangling about the reality of climate change by focusing on those already adapting to shifts in temperature: flora, fauna, and farmers. In less than a decade, mizuma plants in California evolved to the shortened growing season caused by extreme drought. Yukon red squirrels are giving birth more than two weeks earlier to take advantage of global warming-induced increases in spruce cone crops. Vermont winegrowers "alert to the changes in regional weather and climate" are establishing new grape stock for resilience. Geese, salmon, and eels are even abandoning migration when easier winters make staying more advantageous than travel. But some species are less flexible, needing human assistance to relocate, and human migrations are increasing in response to drought and flooding. Observing her neighbors "striving for resiliency" by creating alternatives to a fossil fuel–based culture, Seidl optimistically proposes that humans might also evolve as we adapt, extending our empathy to nonhuman life vulnerable to climate change: "Coming to the aid of species unable to adapt to the Age of Warming, we will revise our role in the ecological world from agents of relentless environmental degradation... to agents who create the conditions conducive to life." So just what do you know about Global Warming?

I bought this book for a reading program and the very first reader, used it in a program for about 25 women. She really found it very helpful and those of us who were at the program were much informed by the time the presentation was over. The book arrived in primo condition.

Nice book, with 2 major problems.

I am reading a copy from my local public library (C)2011.

Ms Seidl evidently doesn't understand the difference between
(kilo, mega,tera) watts (POWER units) and
(kilo, mega,tera) watt-hours (ENERGY UNITS).

Also the book has no index.

A second edition is needed to correct these issues.

Too little too late

She is the typical tree-hugger we all remember from the 70's, straight from the idyllic Vermont countryside in her totally green cabin, growing her own food, generating her own power, rhapsodizing over every adaption the little critters in her world have made, and happy about her choices even while considering the overwhelming changes that will occur on this planet over the next century. I suppose I should give credit to people like her, but I can't help but think those folks will regret their pledge to shelter refugees from ecologically devastated areas. Vermont in a hundred years will probably be one big shantytown with everyone picking through huge garbage piles and killing each other over squatting rights. This book isn't a 'how to', but a 'why we should', and she does give some interesting info for those who 'want to'. But the pessimist in me says 'why bother anymore'.

About the Author

Paolo J. Knill is one of the founders of the expressive arts therapy program at Lesley University, USA and is the Provost of the European Graduate School (EGS) in Switzerland, which offers MA and PhD degrees in expressive arts therapy. Ellen G. Levine and Stephen K. Levine are co-founders of the ISIS-Canada training programme in expressive arts therapy. Ellen is the Dean of Independent Study in expressive arts therapy, education, and consulting at the EGS and Stephen is the Dean of the Doctoral Programme.

All three authors have published extensively in the field, with two of their works, Foundations of Expressive Arts Therapy and Poiesis, published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers.

In-Extremis Medical Care

My disclaimer, I am not a doctor or medical professional. My medical training has entailed Combat Life Saver, Special Operations Tactical Combat Casualty Care, Emergency Medical Technician - Intermediate (EMT-I) and EMT-T (Tactical) (both of which I am not current) and various medical cross-training I have received from Special Forces medics. My experience has included treating combat wounded personnel (all trauma related) and provided third world medical support and assistance in South-west Asia and Africa. So my review and recommendation is from my perspective on this topic.

This book does an excellent job of providing advance skills to layman and professional. I found with my limited medical background the information presented in this book, I could accomplish in-extremis situations. I have read various books on emergency, primitive, survivalist and backcountry medical care and none have compared to this text. Some of the books in my library I am referring to are listed below;

"Ditch Medicine: Advanced Field Procedures for Emergencies" by Hugh Coffee
"Where There Is No Doctor" by David Werner
"Where There Is No Dentist" by Murray Dickson
"Wilderness Medicine" by Paul Auerbach
"Special Operations Forces Medical Handbook" By USSOCOM
"Emergency War Surgery" By NATO
"Emergency War Surgery" By Walter Reed Medical Center (diffrent from NATO version above)

All the above titles are excellent but, again I do believe they do not stand up to this title. If I was to pick one book above to use in conjunction with this book for my operational use, it would be Werner's book "Where There is No Doctor" just because this book has proved indispensable to me overseas in non-trauma related situations.

Overall I highly recommend this mammoth book on improvised, down-and-out medical care. I am sure this book will find its way to shelf of Special Forces medics, Survivalist, "bush" doctors and medical professionals as well as be required reading for all the fore mentioned.

Ridiculous and Impractical

I am a RN and my husband is a MD that does mostly vascular prodecures. We have started doing mission work in the Belizean jungle and have been loading up on reference books to take with us on our next trip as we are pretty much limited to the supplies we bring ourselves. We love "Where There Is No Doctor" and "Oxford Handbook of Tropical Medicine". I read each review for Improvised Medicine and was surprised when we read through the book when it arrived a few days ago. The content is laughable, litterally, we had uncontrollable laughter at the suggestions of "care" in this book! Under amputations it said to build a trough, fill it with 150LBS of "crushed ice" and soak the patient's limb in there to numb it, then take the patient to OR where the OR team is waiting??!!! First who has time or matierials to build a trough in the middle of "Extreme" places? Second, unless you are in Alaska, where are you going to find 150lbs of ice? Crushed ice at that! And an entire OR team is available to you, but no one has anything to medically numb the patient? In most sections of the book you would have to go to speciality store or look online to buy the items he suggests for medical care, you surely aren't going to find them just laying around. I can see where non medical people wouldn't know how ridiculous and impractical this book is, because on the surface it may sound like "okay, maybe that would work". We returned it! There are too many practical books out there. Don't buy this book unless you are giving it as a gag gift to someone in the medical field!
