This second edition capitalizes on comments and suggestions collected over 5 years from world-wide readers. A warm "merci" to all of you! There are several key additions such as a small-signal model of the active clamp forward converter or the ac-response analysis of the QR flyback converter. Small-signal transfer functions of BCM PFC stages are also there, in current mode or voltage mode. Another important addition is the derivation of all rms currents (with a step-by-step approach so that you can follow the flow) of the three basic cells when operated in CCM but also in DCM. Results are presented in a clear and ordered form, also available in dedicated Mathcad files for those of you who want to put these equations at work. This book is for engineers who believe, as I do, that SPICE or simulation in general, can be an excellent assistant in intermediate design steps before going to the bench. Understanding power conversion theory through equations further verified by simulations and practical results are ingredients for a success that I wish to all my readers!

About the Author
Christophe Basso is an Application Engineering Director at ON Semiconductor in Toulouse, France, where he leads an application team dedicated to developing new offline PWM controllers specifications. He has originated numerous integrated circuits among which the NCP120X series has set new standards for low standby power converters. Further to his 2008 book "Switch-Mode Power Supplies: SPICE Simulations and Practical Designs", published by McGraw-Hill, he released a new title in 2012 with Artech House, "Designing Control Loops for Linear and Switching Power Supplies: a Tutorial Guide". He holds 30 patents on power conversion and often publishes papers in conferences and trade magazines including How2Power and PET. He regularly teaches professional seminars at APEC conferences in the US.

Christophe has over 20 years of power supply industry experience. Prior to joining ON Semiconductor in 1999, Christophe was an application engineer at Motorola Semiconductor in Toulouse. Before 1997, he worked as a power supply designer at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in Grenoble, France, for 10 years. He holds a BSEE equivalent from the Montpellier University (France) and a MSEE from the Institut National Polytechnique of Toulouse (France). He is an IEEE Senior member.

Get This Book!!

Well my heavily used first edition copy of this book has now been happily replaced by this wonderful state-of-the-art second edition update. The first edition book has served me so well as one of the most helpful reference collection books to allow me to bridge between theory and actual practice. Now arrives the second edition with corrections, updates and additions that seek to make this tool even more helpful. Has it delivered? Oh yes! The first big improvement is its size. It is slightly taller but significantly wider, which has allowed for a great improvement in formatting. The flow of reading the second edition is fantastic. Where needed mathematical details have been elaborated and are clearer and easier to understand. New additions to switching topologies have been added to the already vast collection.

A subject of this complexity and variability is not easy to distill in a manner which can be easily understood, digested and made practical for the modern day student or established engineer who wishes to design and simulate power converters using SPICE. Mr. Basso very eloquently and most thoroughly covers a huge swath of switch-mode topologies that is easy to understand for both students entering into power conversion and practicing engineers who need a refresher. I have tried other books, either they are over the top theoretical with long drawn out mathematics that leave one hanging in limbo between theory and reality, or they are general and provide very few tools on how to "do it yourself". As a prerequisite to following this book you will need an understanding of algebra, calculus and basic SPICE simulation skills. The book provides you with a link to download many of the SPICE and MathCAD example files in the book as well as demo simulation software.

Is the book perfect? Perfection is quite subjective and in the case of this complex subject, it is hard to please everyone, especially picky engineers. I think Mr. Basso has been able to present the concepts, design and practical steps of using SPICE to design power converters in a balanced middle ground fashion that the vast majority of student and engineers can greatly benefit from. It neither goes to deep into theory nor does it simply skim across the subjects, but provides a hands-on practical mathematical and SPICE based approach to designing modern day power converters.

Every topology that is cover in this book has at least one example design that goes step-by-step through the design process, from calculations of parameters and component values to average and transient SPICE simulations of the design. He goes into the minutia of what to look out for in the particular topology and what topology is correct for a given requirement. If you are a power conversion engineer, or want to be versed in that field, this book is invaluable.

The practical examples covered in this book are of power converters in the low to medium power range. If you are looking for a book with examples to design and simulate very high power converters, this book may not be for you, but it will provide you with most of the building blocks and foundation needed for you to tackle that field.

You will not be disappointed with the money and time you invest in this book. Get It.

My favorite power supply reference

This is my go-to reference book for power supply design. The new edition offers some nice improvements over the first. Most notable is the new layout, which makes it a little easier to use, however their is plenty of new content. It does a great job at bridging the gap between the simple fundamentals that many other books offer and practical real world applications, while offering intuitive ways to predict real world performance through simulation.

It is nice to see a book that covers the design of the entire converter (input filter, clamps, snubbers, etc.) through real world application examples. For instance, a boost converter for a car audio amplifier starting with only the customer requirements and carrying the reader through the entire design process including component selection and thermal considerations. Although it only focuses on the basic topologies (boost, buck, buck-boost, flyback, forward), the approaches demonstrated for deriving their equations and models make it is easy to derive the equations and models for their derivative topologies (push-pull, SEPIC, Cuk, half/full-bridge, etc.).

I recommend this book to all of my colleagues!

Best Single Book for Switching Power Supply Design

As someone who has been involved in switch-mode power supply design for over 30 years, I highly recommend this book.
Before Christophe Basso's first edition, I was constantly digging through multiple reference papers, seminar notes, and specific chapters of various text books to find the information I needed to design and simulate a power supply. His first edition captured all of the design information and simulation techniques in one well-written and useful book. My copy is worn as I have referred to it daily as a design reference.

His second edition builds on this excellent work with additional small signal modeling and analysis, with more SPICE and MathCad examples. Christophe also maintains a website with tools and references. You will find him accessible and worth the read.

The quality of print, larger page format, and better book construction of the latest edition are also appreciated.

It's True

I am writing a book about women and sex myself. In the process of researching for the book I constantly read books on gender, sex, and sexuality. This is the first `how to have better sex' book that has captured my imagination. It is well written, well organised, underpinned by the best of Western and Chinese sexual knowldeges and best of all, if you follow the suggested practices it does make a difference. I thoroughly recommend it.

Wonderful book!

I had two babies 2 years apart, and then, just 2 years later and still feeling pretty fatigued, had an advanced-stage breast cancer that required 9 surgeries (including double mastectomy), 6 months of chemotherapy, 2 months of radiation--this meant early menopause (at age 40), on top of the treatment-related and small-child-related (and job-related!) fatigue. I got the first edition of this book while undergoing treatments, and it made an enormous difference. Now that I'm completely out of the woods and my children are a bit older, I feel even better, and I do credit much of that to the *Multi-Orgasmic Woman*! I had the privilege of knowing Rachel Carlton Abrams during our high-school years, but I'm not unduly biased towards her work--I mention it only because even then she was a healer, an empathetic and wise person whose very presence was steadying and inspiring. I'm not at all surprised that she has pursued both Western and Eastern medicine at an advanced level, and is finding scientifically valid ways to work with both to improve people's lives. Thanks so much, and I highly recommend this wonderful book--if I can feel this great, at age (almost) 44 and after experiencing many challenges to my sexual and overall well-being, then I know it will help others as well.

Not just for sex

This was a great book. It helped me understand the sexual capabilities of men and women. The exercises made me feel better physically, emotionally, and sexually. It also would be a helpful book for women going through menopause.

Novel From A Filmaker That Reads Like A Movie

Complain if you want, but to write visually in a movie style is damn hard. Adam Hamdy pulls it off real well. Film has a set of communication tools different from novels, so to write in a movie style you either need years of training or a lot of visual talent and no training at all.

The premise and execution of a post-resource world is an old tale, and the story is fairly well along the road of others, with a conspiracy, a master villain, sexy moles inside the government, and a hero out for revenge who can't let himself get distracted.

I'm not sure here if the future craft holds much water, and don't know if the author takes the technological and resource issues seriously, but don't really care either. Often, it's fun just to get the bad guy.

An action thriller set in a somewhat Sci-Fi settings

Twenty years from now things will change. One of the possible scenarios is in this book. As one of the characters described it - "We're paying for the excesses of past generations and their inability to make tough decisions." That, however, is just a backdrop for the action-adventure set in the near future.

Scott Pierce was a man with good life and a career in the FSA- the Federal Security Agency, a futuristic amalgamation of CIA and FBI. After his wife died, he abandons all of it and goes undercover, integrating himself into the Brotherhood, a large terrorist organization. In order to become accepted, he spends two years in jail, until the time to save a life of a despicable criminal gives him the opportunity he seeks. This is where the story begins.

Pierce is a character who is set on revenge and, how he puts it - "joining the woman he loves." That smacks of martyrdom but does set the immediate motivation for the main hero. There's really no black and white gradations for the characters, both main and secondary, as, thankfully, is the case with better contemporary novels.

One good thing about the books we have access to nowadays, thanks to the ease of publishing provided by Kindle and similar platforms, is that we get to experience books that are not formulaic. There's no gatekeeper in the form of the big publisher that would say something like - "Well, good story but, the format is really not something the reader would want. We are not going to take a risk on it." How many good books haven't gotten published because of that, I wonder. Now, however, these books are on the market and the only gatekeepers here are we, the readers. We either like the book or not, we can recommend a book to our friends or we can say they shouldn't bother.

About this book. I do agree with some of the other reviewers - the book is written in such a way that sometimes it almost feels like watching a movie. Is it a good movie? Yes, I'd go see it. From the literary standpoint, the prose is tight, the narrative unfolds smoothly, and the characters are well fleshed out. The action is cinematic and fast, and the background world is revealed to us in small details that make almost a subconscious impressions - like the stained table cloth or dim lightning levels. There's less description as the story progresses, however, which I think is a mistake on the part of the author - action and character exploration is all well but those little bits of description created a better ambiance in the beginning. However, the cast of characters is large, adding to the descriptive side of the narrative.

The novel, being set in the future, demonstrates possible technologies that could be achieved in just a couple decades. Most of it is something we can relate to and almost recognize; a few things, like Graviton tech, seem to be out there. I wouldn't really classify the novel as a pure Sci-Fi, since the technologies described could probably be replaced by something we use now and would still have a similar impact on the story. As such, they do not seem essential. In my opinion, it's an action story set in a slightly Sci-Fi settings.

All in all, this is a solid piece of writing.

Scary that this could really happen!

This genre isn't my usual preference yet I immensely enjoyed Battalion. There's not a dull moment in this book, not even on the very last page. This reads like a movie and is full of excitement. This seems like a book that would reach young men, especially those interested in conspiracy theories and global destruction!

I received this book to review. These opinions are 100% mine.

A great book which should be read by everyone!

I think that this book is very informative on what we are doing to our environment. This book tells about Rachel Carson's life, family, career, and more. It tells about how she fought to keep our environment clean and safe for everyone. She warned people in her book, Silent Spring, which can also be found here on Amazon.com. Well, I cannot spoil this book! What I can tell you is that this is a great book which you should read.

Overview of the life of Rachel Carson

Rachel Carson did not have an easy life. She had continuous health problems, tried to become a practicing marine scientist when all others in the profession were men, and struggled to support her family. She persevered, however, and eventually she became a successful author and spokeswoman for the ocean. We remember her today for her work on the book, Silent Spring. Silent Spring changed a nation's environmental policies, and she defended her book's conclusions as she was battling cancer.

Data management including assessment, scrubbing, enrichment, tagging, hierarchies, and categories.

About the Author
Rahul Saxena is the Director in Advanced Services at Cisco Systems. He is an MBA from the A. B. Freeman School of Business at Tulane University in New Orleans. Rahul has worked in business analytics, operations management, and management consulting roles in the USA, India, and Latin America. Prior to assuming his current position at Cisco Systems, Rahul held various positions at McAfee, IBM and the Indian Railways. He has also co-authored an IBM Redbook on Business Architecture.

Anand Srinivasan is the founder and CEO of Dsquare Solutions, a boutique analytics services and consulting firm. He holds a BS degree in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology and an MS (Industrial Engineering) from Purdue University. Prior to assuming his current position Anand held various positions at Sabre Airline Solutions, Mu Sigma Business Solutions and Dell, all of them focused on building state of the art business analytics and optimization solutions.

Superb book on Business Analytics for Practitioners and their Managers

This 162-page book is a good read for those wanting a thorough overview of all key elements of Business Analytics from data scrubbing through working with client executives. The authors, Rahul Saxena and Anand Srinivasan, have deep experiences as analytics practitioners and as directors of analytics teams. As a result, their book is particularly well suited for analysts & developers wanting to see the "complete picture" of analytics best practices and managers/leaders of analytics teams. Client management wanting to increase the consumption of analytics in their organizations would also benefit. The book's writing is clear and could be read quickly, but the wise reader will pause intermittently to reflect and make notes on specific changes to make in his/her organization.

Inspiring! A must read for any student of Kyukoshin Karate

This truly was inspirational and a must read for not only Kyokushin students, but anyone who is interested in what it must be like to live and breath martial arts as a foreigner in Japan.

Nicholas Pettas was the last uchi deshi (live-in student) of Sosai Oyama Masutatsu, the founder of Kyokushinkai. From Denmark, Nicholas made the journey to Japan at the age of 18, to spend three years in the arduous life of an uchi deshi.

You learn first hand what life was like. From the food, the language, the life-style and, mostly, the karate. His journey is a fight for survival on a daily basis. Unlike many 18 year olds, myself included, Nicholas found strength internally and maturity beyond his years. He develops on his own, what are known as the seven virtues of the samurai. Rectitude, Courage, Benevolence, Respect, Honesty, Honour and Loyalty.

This might be in great part to advice given to him by his Shihan from Demark, who had trained in Japan for some time in his youth. He told Nicholas to follow and do as the Japanese do, not the foreigners. The Japanese students tend to dislike the Western students, and the westerns students in turn tend to be disrespectful to their Japanese counterparts. Except for Nicholas, who not only learns their Karate, but also their language and culture, completely immersing and assimilating himself.

While reading the book, you can't help but fantasize what it would have been like to do what he has done. I think back to my youth and I would have loved to make that journey. I had an opportunity in my youth to go to Boston College of Music for three years, but lacked the courage to go. Perhaps this was because I was a small-town boy from a different country. I don't know. But I admire Nicholas' courage to leave his friends and family at such a young age to go halfway around the world, to a country whose language he couldn't speak, culture he didn't know, for three years without returning home.

Though I am now in my 40s, returning to martial arts after a long layoff, I found the whole book about a young boy becoming a man inside the Lion's Den incredibly inspirational. Nicholas was a wise young man and had a natural ability to know right from wrong and what it would take to survive. I learnt a lot myself through his story. In particular about respect, gratitude and humility. He speaks about a saying in Japan that expresses the true meaning of virtue and respect. "The bigger and heavier the rice gets the lower it bends its head to everyone". The true essence of not only Nicholas' journey is found in that saying, but of true martial arts.

The young Nicholas teaches us that by controlling our inner desires and temptations through training of the mind and body we can make the changes we desire in the world, but it starts with each of us on a personal level. He says it all boils down to being kind to your fellow humans and hard on yourself. Wise words from this young man.

The book has inspired me to return home to my family, my work and my dojo, to work hard and not allow age to be a factor, but to still accomplish the dreams I had in my youth. To be the best karateka and person I can be. To make a good impact on the world and the people around me.

I can't recommend this book enough, and it is easy to understand why the last non-Japanese to complete Master Oyama's course, today, Nicholas Pettas is known in Japan as "The Blue-eyed Samurai", an acknowledgment of his true Samurai Spirit.

feel the samurai spirit

A great read! Couldn't stop reading from the word GO! An honest insight into Nicholas Pettas Sensei's immersion into the world of kyokushin karate as an uchi Deshi at honbu.

His journey from Denmark to Japan and three glorious years as a personal student of the founder of kyokushin karate Oyama Mastatsu. He describes how he was polished and gained luster from the hard budo spirited training. The small luxuries enjoyed as he graduated through the ranks. How he strives to make a difference and gain respect and acceptance as a person and truly integrate into a culture that one is rarely ever given a chance to step into.

it is a world inside a world which you rarely get a glimpse into... All the trials and tribulations of a young boy transforming into a strong man and a karate champion taking on the best of the best.

Highlights -- I Loved the personal anecdotes of his moments with Sosai.

All I can say is...Amazing.

I saw a Karate documentary on NHK with the author as the host and I became interested in Karate. As a U.S. Marine whom has lived on and off in Japan I was interested in learning more of his story. I had attained a black belt in the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program and from his example I started studying Karate here in Japan.
I found this book to be completely engrossing and I felt that I was sharing in and apart of his journey. I was particularly interested in his accounts of the camps and the everyday life in the dojo. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Karate, Japan, or how to survive and thrive in adverse conditions. This book is an excellent account of a true fighting spirit.
