Harmonic Foundation for Jazz and Popular Music, by Jimmy Amadie

by Jimmy Amadie. Unique method for creating chord voicings and harmonizing a melody. Learning Jimmy s harmonization methods will enhance your personal creativity, make the world of harmony a friendly world to explore, and create limitless possibilities. Mr. Amadie uses his simple techniques over several well-known standards to clearly demonstrate it's ease of use and dramatic musical impact.
Unlike other jazz harmony books that simply provide a few harmonic choices, this book also teaches you how to "think" about jazz harmony - providing the "why to play" as well as the "what to play." This added dimension means you will never be at a loss for new harmonic ideas once you understand the rules of the "Amadiean Creed."
For all instruments; students, teachers, arrangers, composers, and performers. 166 spiral-bound pages for easy opening.
This text, using a unique method founded on 5-note harmony, will help students, teachers, and pro players who need to know how to voice chords and harmonize a melody. Using a step-by-step approach resulting from the author's years of experience as a pianist, composer, arranger, and teacher, its guidelines will help each player develop his creative potential to the fullest.
In combination with his second book, "Jazz Improv: How To Play It And Teach It", which follows the evolution of jazz through a number of styles, it becomes a comprehensive treatise for learning the essentials of harmony and improvisation.
"My greatest teacher, Jimmy Amadie, was a true inspiration both musically and spiritually. I had one year of piano lessons with him when I was 17 and he gave me my foundation of harmonic understanding of jazz on the piano....What he probably taught me most is the value and meaning of blessing others with solid instruction and to inspire them to transcend their own limits. I will always have Jimmy in my heart and I wish him a blessed journey onward from this plane." Guitarist Kurt Rosewinkel

Jazz Student for 15 years. Book Doesnt Live Up To Hype.
By Mel O
Another book that could be 5 pages long, poorly titled, despite its cool mid-century cover.

Here's an approximation of the entire book or "creed" in a nutshell (5 note chord voicings):

1) 2 notes with left hand (R+3rd, R+5th, R+6, R+7)
2) 3 notes with right hand (3rd if not used in left hand plus any two extensions, 7th, 9th, 11th, 13th)
3) Left hand and right hand "grips" shouldn't be anymore than a 7th apart from each other.
4) Formula is essentially the same for all chord varieties, Maj, Min, Dom, Dim, Aug

....this formula is neither new nor invented by jimmy amadie, so to name it as such is a bit pretentious. I would compare the whole book to a single comping lesson from a competent jazz instructor, with the exercises and examples meant to drive the point home and develop the ear. A valuable lesson yes, but no secret knowledge or anything approaching an intrinsic creed or overall foundation of jazz and pop harmony.

Mark Levine's Jazz Books are money better spent and equally if not more so clear and to the point for those looking for plain language learning. For those looking for a deeper understanding of harmony, check out Ron Miller's Modal Jazz Composition Vol 1-2, some of the truly deepest and rich sounding voicings and ideas you'll find in text.

Excellent
By ArtFan
There are several things that make this, I believe, the best starting point for a pianist who has no prior experience playing jazz, regardless of whether they are competent in other styles of music.

First, Amadie does not beat around the bush or make the vague, unsubstantiated statements often found in other jazz books. You will not find advice like "play what you hear in your head", or "improvise over these modes." Instead, you will find a complete, immediately useful system for voicing chords and an intelligent sequence of practical exercises for learning this system and getting it under your fingers. It is two-handed voicing for Major, Minor-Major, Minor 7, Dominant, and Diminished chords and their extensions (9ths, 13s, augmented, etc). Both his explanations and practical exercises are digestible. He neither dives too quickly into complicated material nor limits himself to treading shallow water.

Second, this is a manual rather than a book. His writing is no-nonsense and no frills. Amadie is not trying to meet a quota of words. He doesn't try to fill pages with useless verbage. I personally find this refreshing. It fits my learning style.

The book is light on theory and heavy on method and exercise. I believe this is the proper way to learn to play. It puts the chords and scales under your fingers first. You have the satisfaction of playing proper voicings and being able to instantly apply what you've learned to lead sheets and fakebooks. As you become familiar with the relationships between the notes and chords - as it becomes second nature and you no longer have to think about it - two things will happen: (a) your natural curiosity will result in figuring out some of the theory on your own, and (b) the theory when explained to you will make more sense and require less thought due to your newly-found familiarity with the keyboard.

Third, I am a firm believer that those who teach should also be able to "do." Amadie is a very good jazz pianist. Go to his website and listen to samples. Read his biography.

Fourth, you are never left wondering what notes to play. It's all there for you. You don't need to think about it, you just need to practice it.

Summary: In "The Harmonic Foundation" Amadie shows you how to construct jazz voicings on the chords you find in lead sheets and fake books. It also shows you how to convert the simple chords written for any song (basic major and minor chords), into the embellished chords with extended harmonics. Each chord can be voiced in many different ways. It's up to you which voicings to use as you play a song. The exercises include the application of the method to real songs; in these songs the student must use what they've learned to provide voicings for the chord changes.

Working through this book the student will learn the full range of chords required in playing jazz, how to voice them, and will practice them enough in all keys as to be able to follow along in fake books.

I think Amadie deserves a lot of credit for breaking down an art form into its quintessential building blocks and sharing that information with us.

Pure Excellence!
By Ricardo E Alvarez
If I had to choose just 2 books on Jazz harmony/improv out of all that I’ve bought and downloaded in the last 10 years, this one would have be one of them (The other would be J.Amadie’s book on Improv!)
It assumes nothing, it doesn’t beat around the bush, it cuts no corners, and every word written in it serves a purpose, and that purpose is immediately put to practice, not creating drills that might eventually help, but actually creating the thing itself (a palette of rich sounding fat chords that can be applied to any context) from the start.
One thing I liked is as he mentions in the book, the goal through the book is not to memorize voicings, but rather, to learn the thinking process behind creating them to harmonize melodies and learning to be aware of what can be created, to use mind and ear. That’s invaluable, I think: a book that teaches you to think in a way that you can freely create.
I’m not a piano player, ( i play trombone) and when I started on this book, I spent about two weeks just working on Exercise II, and it has been tremendous help.
Just from the Introduction of the book you can tell the dedication and standard of excellence that was poured into this. Really, thank you for such great work. It makes a huge difference for those of us that are always searching for a richer and more enjoyable way to understand and create music.
