Great book!

This is a great book! Mr. Cahill tells a story about a 27 year-old man named Tim, who moves to San Francisco to start a new life. His portrayal of the main characters are 3-dimensional and nuanced. As a reader, I was totally engaged by Tim's struggle to stay afloat amidst his powerful longings for a beautiful woman, despite her longings for something else. This is a total page turner. Between reads, I found that I was looking forward to returning to the story. Part of the strength of this book, is that Tim is both an accessible and sympathetic character. I discovered myself in Tim, and found myself rooting for him throughout. This book is truly not to be missed!!

Captures creative writing programs -- and love from across the campus -- perfectly

If you've ever taken a college writing workshop, this book will resonate. The language is superb, the characters are all three dimensional, and the pacing is excellent. Joy is an incredibly intriguing character and by the end of the book, you'll be as fascinated with her as Tim is. The setting also captures the college writing workshop experience perfectly. If you're struggling through a creative writing degree -- or pining after that unreachable girl from across the campus -- this book is for you. A great book to curl up with at night, and well recommended for a late night read.

Superb Read!

I began this book with an open mind, but after reading the prologue, I admittedly presumed this book might be full of mens' unsuccessful attempts at trying to understand women and the differences between the two sexes. I was more than pleasantly surprised, however, to discover that this book reveals insight, not so much into the differences between men and women, but offers more of a reflection on love, lust and the games people play with each other, as well as with themselves. Games and ways of being in the world that can ultimately free us from other people's judgments and expectations, or hold us hostage forever.

This story begin with Tim, a bit of a lost soul, who truly wants to follow his dreams, but is consumed, at times, with depression, self-doubt and his perceived inability to live up to his own, as well as up to others, rigid, compartmentalized expectations of him. Tim, an authentic young man, who wears his heart on his sleeve, falls head over heels with an elusive beauty, Joy, who has made a life by subtly, and sometimes not so subtly, using her looks and society's treatment of beautiful, seemingly unapproachable women, to get what she wants, whenever she wants. Tim lets go, allows himself to fall, while also managing to find a way back to himself and his own sense of self worth.

The author does an incredible job of creating complex, vulnerable, believable characters that many of us can relate to. Cahill's ability to describe Tim's perception of others, as well as himself, is so profound and meaningful, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading reading certain lines and passages over and over again. I found myself slowing down near the end of the novel, savoring the last chapters, not wanting it to end.

I loved how the author ultimately unveiled the notion, that by listening to our inner voice, our deepest hearts desire, that disregards disconnection and feelings of inadequacy, we truly can live and love authentically, while still taking care of ourselves. Cahill also eloquently depicts how our relationships, our heartbreaks, as well as our perceived "mistakes" and shortcomings, if we pause long enough to take note, can offer us opportunities to truly connect with who we are and what we want in the world, providing us with a richer, deeper life.

I look forward to reading many more novels from this up and coming author!

Ray Barrera was a tinker in his childhood. From making mods and custom maps in games such as StarCraft and Unreal Tournament to developing open source role-playing games using RPG Maker, he always had a passion for game development. The passion stayed with him, and after many years as a hobbyist, he decided to take the plunge into professional development. In the initial stages of his career, he was fortunate enough to work on educational and research projects for major contractors in the defense industry, allowing him to blend his love for games with his innate desire to teach and create interactive experiences. Since then, he has straddled the line between entertainment and education. Unity was the logical weapon of choice for him as it gave him the flexibility to create games and applications and iterate quickly. Serious Game AI Programmers ONLY!

I'm highly cynical on Game AI and programming it. There are so many different areas that should be covered in any book that touts AI programming, simply discussing a finite state machine isn't enough. My de facto book is "Programming Game AI by Example - Buckland" which covers all of the subject material discussed in this book. Using that well known book as my base, this book was amazing as well. Which is why I rated it at 5 stars, the pathing, trees, flocks, and fuzzy logic were all covered elegantly and all of them were easily read and discussed in detail. The final chapter (8) brings it all together with some working examples of how everything ties together, this is something highly required with AI books. If you just have the theory and the how, it's something added like the icing on the cake when you get to see the fruit of your labor in action.

Great for Intermediate Devs

I'm one of the technical reviewers of this book. This book should prove useful for any intermediate programmers looking to get into developing Unity projects with solid, functional AI implementations. It starts off at a reasonable pace, introducing basic concepts and giving barebones implementations of them, but it also doesn't shy away from discussing the theory behind them.

Each chapter adds a new layer of complexity to the AI functionality the reader is shown until the finale when it walks you through developing a working AI that could be used in a simple game. The work isn't done for you, but all of the tools you'll need to get to work on your own AI in the Unity engine are introduced and explained in an easy to understand manner.

If you're interested in this book, I'd recommend it for anyone already possessing some skill with C# or similar C-based languages. Beginners will likely become overwhelmed by the coding examples within the first one or two chapters and won't see the full benefit of the content as provided.

From what I've read so far this is a great book for learning about AI Programming. Not only does it go into great detail, I explains the purpose behind what is being done. I don't have much experience in programming, so from a beginner's perspective I was able to understand most of what was discussed. I look forward to learning more.

About the Author

Karel Schrijver, Senior Fellow, Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Center, California,Iris Schrijver, Professor of Pathology and Pediatrics, Stanford University School of Medicine Pathology Department

Karel Schrijver is a Senior Fellow at Lockheed Martin's Advanced Technology Center in Palo Alto, California. He was trained as a stellar astrophysicist, but soon focused on the Sun as the one star that regulates life on Earth. His professional interests range from the magnetism in the solar interior and atmosphere to interplanetary space, to the environments of planets, and to the impacts of space weather on human technology. He has authored many research publications and several pieces for the general public, but this is the first book reaching beyond his daily work. He never tires from looking at the beautiful star that we live with, observed with instruments in space that capture the Sun's atmosphere in colors that cannot reach the unaided human eye.

Iris Schrijver is a Professor of Pathology and Pediatrics at Stanford University School of Medicine. She is a physician with medical specialty training in both genetics and pathology, and she directs the Molecular Pathology laboratory at the Stanford Medical Center. This laboratory provides diagnostic testing for children and adults with inherited conditions and with cancers. Depending on the condition tested for, the testing helps to make a diagnosis, to establish the prognosis, to select the right treatment, and to monitor for recurrence of disease. Her research targets the causes of hereditary hearing loss and cystic fibrosis, and the development and application of optimal diagnostic methods. She has authored and edited original research articles, book chapters, and books. She is fascinated by all the connections between her world of DNA, Karel's universe, and the sheer multitude of links between them, so paramount to all aspects of life.

I ordered this book because the author was a guest on C2C a few years back and I found her interview interesting. First of all, let me just say that the typeface is tiny making this book difficult to read. And no, I don't normally need readers. Secondly, if you are thinking about ordering this book because you think it is about humankind's cosmic connection to the stars and what that might mean to us on a spiritual level as it relates to the evolvement of us as a race of intelligent beings, this is not the book to order. It is not about that; although, her guest spot on C2C made it sound like it was when she was recommending her book to the audience. It is a book about the human body's continuous regeneration on a cellular level, how disease and sickness affects us and how our bodies cope and adjust, with a quick tidbit about cosmology and other earth sciences all wrapped up in a "you're made of stardust" concept. I liken it to watching paint dry. This author makes it sound like most of us don't know how the human body functions or why the earth rotates. Barely interesting, tiny print to boot and not worth the $25.00 I spent. Disappointed. Would not recommend. Waste of money.

Highly recommended for philosophers !

This lucid and important book was considered by Schopenhauer as the introduction to his magnum opus "The World as Will and as Representation". It can be conceived as Schopenhauer's alternative version to Kant's "Critique of Pure Reason" as an attempt to map all A-PRIORI knowledge. Schopenhauer, an obvious sequel to Kant, differentiates himself from Kant in this book in two basic assumptions: 1. There is no distinction between REPRESENTATION and OBJECT. We perceive objects directly, not through a subjective "buffer". 2. PERCEPTION is not logically independent of UNDERSTANDING, on the contrary. We perceive objects (necessarily) already understood, i.e. determined and related to other objects. Schopenhauer interprets the last premiss as the Principle of Sufficient Reason, which he claims to be the root of all A-PRIORI knowledge.

Fundamental Literature

I am happy to encourage any reader to Schpenhauer's doctoral thesis, just as much as he himself did in the introduction of the World as Will and Representation. The book is absolutely worth the time spent, and it is indeed a coherent prime step (though this is a revised edition of the 1814 original) to Schopenhauer's philosophical system. The translation by E.F.Payne is product of a life's effort. It is almost impecable and will stand to the demands of the accurate reader, though it may be advisable to compare and review the original in order to look for the literary sound of the ideas exposed. Schopenhauer is one of those rare cases where highly expressive prose correlates smoothly with mighty philosophical meaning. He may also be an excellent way to perfect our understanding of Kant.

Minor Problem

This amazing treatise on human knowledge has one little fault. The editors at Open Court left out eleven words in the Tranlator's Introduction. This omission should gratify present-day philosophers in that it turns Schopenhauer's words into modern-sounding nonsense. I will surround the omitted words with parentheses. On page xx, Schopenhauer is quoted: " ...so that I cannot hope ever to find a more correct and accurate expression of that core of my philosophy (than what is there recorded. Whoever wishes to know my philosophy) thoroughly and investigate it seriously must take that chapter into consideration." You see, the occurrence of the word "philosophy" twice in close proximity utterly confused them. I notified Open Court but did not receive an acknowledgement. Other than this, I have to judge this book as one of the few life-changing writings that occur a few times every century. For laughs, read Heidegger's "Principle of Reason" and compare the two.

Or maybe you don’t even like resting because you feel like you’re not being productive? Then, Rhythms of Grace: Discovering God’s Tempo for Your Life by Kerri Weems should be next on your reading list. Obligations, priorities, goals and dreams. Where does it all fit?

Frazzled. Burnt-out.
Distracted.
Stretched thin. Weary.

None of those are pretty images, but they're sure vivid.
And who hasn't experienced a period of time when those words are your reality?

Sometimes stress comes with a season- new job, no job, holidays, college, illness- and it will pass in time.
But sometimes, your life will need restructuring to reclaim "shalom" as much as possible.

Kerri Weems begins this book by discussing that- "shalom."
This old Hebrew word fascinates me, because it hints at wholeness and healing through all of our lives.
It suggests everything being as it should be, moving to a rhythm of grace.

St. Paul compared life to a long distance run, where ground is gained by one-foot-in-front-of-the-other persistence. Each person needs a pace they can sustain without sacrificing their sanity or soul.
This book is a straight-talking, compassionate guide to setting your pace in all areas: relationships, family and home, work, your schedule, your health, and your spiritual vitality.

Kerri suggests we establish a cycle of rebooting, taking time to reflect on what's working for us and what's not. Then she encourages us to dream a little, imagining a future of priorities and purpose.
She reminds us that "We cannot conquer time, we can only sanctify and redeem it."

Especially now, with the holiday season coming, I think there will be many people wondering how they're going to "run the race" in 2015. They're tired, worn out, and burdened. They know they can't stop moving, so many people depend on them!
Perhaps this book would become a gentle guide for them. It would say "I know you can't stop running, but let's take a look at your pace. Let's reboot yours days, weeks, and months so that next year is less draining." If you need a last minute gift, you could certainly look at Rhythms of Grace.

Beautiful Book for Discovering Margin and Peace in Your Schedule

Rhythms of Grace: Discovering God’s Tempo for Your Life by Kerri Weems is a book that is written for women who feel a little overwhelmed. Is your schedule driving you? Do you feel like you’re constantly busy but accomplishing nothing? Do you feel need for a little more margin and rest in your life? Do you want to be able to connect your schedule to God’s mission for you in life?

If you could answer yes to any of these questions, Weems has a word for you. Rhythms of Grace is about putting the important things first in your weekly rhythm, and making those the things that are important parts of your day. She begins with the idea of finding shalom in your lifestyle, and about how our culture that is driven by work and productivity will never allow us to naturally make space for peace and rest in our lives.

She explores the sabbath and rest. She discusses whether or not your doing the right things for the right reasons or for the wrong reasons because the right things, if done for the wrong reasons, are still the wrong things. After this discussion, she comes to the heart of her book with the idea that there are “pacesetters” and “peacestealers,” These “pacesetters” are the good things and situations that set the pace of our lives. However, many of them, if not given their proper place in our lives can become “peacestealers” and take the peace in our lives away. The four areas of life where Weems marks these pacesetters and peacestealers is through work, relationships, our bodies and our spiritual vitality.

Once you’ve determined these entities (and the questions at the end of each chapter will help you to do so), you are ready to reboot your schedule. This means you take these pacesetters, your commitments, etc. and you begin to set up your weekly rhythm and daily schedule for your life.

I found this book to be a beautiful reminder that time management is about more than just filling in the boxes on your calendar. Instead, this book is about how your schedule should be birthed out of the things and people who are most important to you, and that you should always leave time to rest and recharge. I hope to find that as I continue to reset my schedule that the lessons learned here will help my days to be a little less frantic.
