This is a text book for my Nursing Classes as GCU, I saved over 30 dollars buying it from Amazon! This is one book that I will not be selling back it is well written, detailed to really help do the assessments, and has some great pictures to help with lack of experience. A monumental work

This book is a monumental compilation of every match and tournament game that Fischer played. The binding and size make this easy to use and lays open while reading or studying. There are also a number of pictures, many of which I have never seen. And the author provides the crosstables for every match and tournament. I've purchased other books from Russell and they really do a great job.

On the downside, the annotations are minimal and the organization is so jam-packed that it's jumbled. And the pictures are grainy.

All in all, this is a must read for any chess player who values the brilliance of Bobby Fischer. And given the limitations of a book that contains nearly a thousand games, it's quite a wonderful accomplishment.

Highly disappointing

This book reads like an Informant issue. I feel I've been misled in what I've read about the book. In a number of different reviews, I heard Muller has pored over nearly 1000 games in extreme depth, and annotated all of them.

There are 735 games, which is significantly less than 1000, as the product information claims. A large number of games have maybe 3 total annotations, and not particularly insightful ones (most of which Fritz could reproduce). A large number of the annotations come without words, only using the standard chess symbols (?, !, !?, ?!, +=, +-, etc.). In this sense, the book reminds me of a large Informant issue, a magazine which I find to be unreadable.

The book's pages are divided into four columns, with a list of game after game, and the meager annotations. Muller gives more coverage to games I'm sure he felt were important, such as the matches with Spassky. Considering Muller's normal style of giving variations for every move ad nauseam in his endgame works, I feel let down.

Mueller has attempted to collect all of the Fischer's games in one volume and annotate them - a formidable task. He has succeeded in the former, but sadly his comments are very sparse. Of course it would be foolish to expect exhausted verbal comments on each game as that would require more than 2000 pages, but in my opinion it would have been better to give detailed annotations to a selected number of games such as those against Byrne brothers, Letelier, Spassky, Tal, Botvinnik - the number of such games not exceeding, may be, one hundred, and then give the annotations of the rest of the games rather sparsely. True, it would have raised the number of pages of the book to above 550 and also correspondingly the price of the book from $30 to $45. But I think chess lovers would have loved the volume even more. Personally my choice for Fischer's collection of games is by, you guessed it, Khalifman and his collaborators. Khalifman and his team is meticulous in annotating and rarely make a mistake. I am aware that Fischer made the claim that he never made a mistake in published analysis - a claim refuted by the great Yuri Averbakh, who went on to correctly insist that analysis can never be perfect. To sum up I have awarded four stars because of the quality of annotations. Mueller is perfectly capable of greatly improving the annotations but practical considerations of publications limited his hand.

About the Author
Edward Anderson, born in Texas in 1905, grew up in Oklahoma, pursued a writing career that ranged across journalism, pulp fiction and screenwriting. He rode the railways as a hobo during the Depression era and encapsulated his experiences in his classic first novel, Hungry Men (1935) and followed that with his masterpiece Thieves Like Us in 1937. He wrote briefly for Hollywood studios before resuming his career as a journalist in Texas and California. He died in 1969.

Brilliant proto-hardboiled novel

Written in 1937, Thieves Like Us--while not the first hardboiled novel (that honor goes to the work of Dashiell Hammett, hands down)--is nevertheless one of the great hardboiled classics. Basis for two films--Nicholas Ray's 1948 They Live By Night and Robert Altman's 1974 film of the same name--it tells of working class joes during the Depression who make a living by robbing banks, talking about it as white-collar slobs would a day at the office. Only with a lot more slang, spice, and color.
The writing is brisk, fresh, and succinct. Anderson is great at capturing the feel of the time, through the terrific dialogue and his clean punchy prose. Thieves Like Us is a real joy to read because it's a no BS book; you can really feel the characters when you're reading it like they were right next to you.
That violence is a natural part of that life goes without saying. The violence portrayed is done so without gore or sensationalism--it's beautifully integrated into the story, adding that much more to the power and resonance of this work.
Who should read this? Those who want to know where hardboiled came from. Those who want a strong sense of American literature--i.e., what America contributed to world literature. Those who are students of the Depression, adding to their understanding of that period. And those who love a great story.

No way out.

Thieves Like Us is a thoroughly downbeat, noirish tale about a trio of career criminals who escape from an Oklahoma prison and proceed to commit a series of bank robberies. The one nicknamed Bowie finds love with a poor country girl. As the two lovers set up housekeeping despite the ever present threat of discovery hanging over their heads, the reader is acutely aware that the phrase "happily ever after" is not likely to play much of a role here.

The plot of this dark Depression era work takes a relentlessly downward spiral as the characters inevitably become trapped in a spider web of their own making. Author Edward Anderson did a great job in bringing to life the rural small town settings against which the majority of the narrative takes place. Especially noteworthy is the plentiful dialogue featuring a distinctive vernacular that lends authenticity to the proceedings.

Written in the 1930s, Thieves Like Us is very much a product of its time. Its palpable sense of desperation and disillusionment fits right in with the mood of a nation struggling against hard economic conditions.

birth of a genre?

You've got to feel sorry for the guy who originates a genre. When he creates his work it's so original and exciting that it spawns a legion of imitators, but decades down the road, when folks pick up that seminal work, it feels dated and derivative. This seems to be the case with Thieves Like Us. When it was published, Anderson was compared to Faulkner and Hemingway. Then it looks like the book experienced lengthy periods when it was out of print, experienced revivals when it was twice adapted for the movies and currently enjoys a fairly strong reputation as a representative noir crime story from the Depression, along the lines of Hammett or Chandler. Now those are some pretty weighty comparisons to be throwing around, and I don't know that they are fair, but the book will stand quite nicely on it's own.
Anderson tells the story of three convicts: Elmo "Chicamaw" Mobley, T.W. "T-Dub" Masefield and Bowie Bowers, who escape from an Alcatona, OK prison in 1935 and return to the only jobs they are any good at--robbing banks. The three quickly pile up a tidy sum of cash and start living high on the hog, at which point the story focusses on Bowers and his courtship of a young girl named Keechie. The plot elements are familiar: folks don't mind the boys robbing banks because so many lost their bank deposits in the Crash that they figure bankers are thieves, alcohol and gambling eat away at the money pretty quickly, everyone dreams of going straight and just needs a little sum of ready cash to do so but that cash always seems to disappear, young lovers go on the lam, there's sensationalistic press coverage and when the boys set out to commit one last robbery, we're fairly sure there's trouble ahead. But it's all deftly handled, in spare, punchy prose and, except for some brief sermonizing about evil capitalists, it's reasonably free of working class cant; a seminal work of crime fiction.

When an unlikely and catastrophic engine failure strikes The River, Bhatterji is confident he can effect repairs with heroic engineering, but Satterwaithe and the other sailors among the crew plot to save her with a glorious last gasp for the old ways, mesmerized by a vision of arriving at Jupiter proudly under sail. The story of their doom has the power, the poetry, and the inevitability of a Greek tragedy. This is a great science fiction novel, Flynn's best yet.

The best hard-SF tragic novel of character yet written.

The MSS "River of Stars", the grandest of the great magsail liners, was launched in 2051. But the new Farnsworth fusion thrusters rang the death-knell for the magsails, and the now-obsolete liner was converted to fusion power in 2084. Two decades later, she has become a tramp freighter, bound for Dinwoody Poke, Jupiter space, on what will be her final voyage....

The Middle System -- Mars, the Belt, Jupiter space -- has not developed tidily, and the crew is made up of casualties of the great 21st-century space boom. RIVER is their story.

RIVER is a tour de force of character developement. We watch, riveted, as these motley misfits squabble, beef and try to cope, in the hermetic isolation of a ship becalmed in space -- two of the four Farnsworth engines have been ruined in a freak accident. The ship has 19 days to rebuild the engines, or she will pass the balk line, the point of no return, and drift endlessly away from settled space.

The repairs go slowly, but the ship's Engineer is a master of improvisation, and no one doubts he will fix the engines in time. No one, that is, but the oldest magsailors, who remember that the RIVER still has her old sails, unused for decades. They decide to fix them up, just in case. No one likes, or trusts, the acting captain, so they don't tell him (or the Engineer) their plan -- which has a large share of nostalgia for the lost Age of Sail. And there isn't enough superconducting hobartium on board to repair both engines and sails....

RIVER is a classical tragedy. Hubris, small mistakes, misunderstandings, mishaps and personal conflicts collide, echo and feed back in a downward spiral that will ultimately wreck the great ship. It wouldn't be fair to reveal the ending, but it's not a happy one. There are no real villains here, just flawed people trying to cope, at times heroically. But the Fates are not on their side.

Flynn tells his story in the third-person omniscient, with dry asides as he develops his characters. The omniscient narrator is the Greek chorus to the inevitable tragedy, which develops with an awful majesty. Flynn's writing is masterful. His pacing is grave, controlled, ironic. His characters will break your heart as they work, love, fight, grow, grieve and die. This is a wonderful book, easily Flynn's best. RIVER is set in the future of Flynn's popular near-future "Star" tetrology (also recommended), but is a standalone novel. This is the best hard-SF tragic novel of character yet written (though this is an uncrowded niche). And the cover art, by Stephan Martiniere, is just flat gorgeous. Highly recommended.

Top-notch science fiction

I'm surprised that this book hasn't received more attention. It's an absolutely outstanding novel and is that rare case of genre fiction that transcends its genre and qualifies as literature. The story is simple --- the title says it all --- but compelling and the characterization, narration, and dialogue are sharp and intelligent. Best of all, the characters drive the story, rather than the other way around (a common failing in sf, where ideas are typically much more interesting than people). The entire novel takes place on The River of Stars, a Jovian merchant ship that has seen better days. Its crew and a single passenger are the only characters, and their backgrounds and interactions propel the story to its tragic conclusion. There are very few missteps in this book. I can think of two: that the characters of Corrigan and Gorgas seem fuzzily delineated (were they a single character in an earlier draft?) and that mysterious events in the pasts of the crew are somewhat abruptly and implausibly revealed at the end of the book. These are minor, however, given the overall success of the novel, which I highly recommend.

WHY YOU SHOULD READ:

Readers who delight working out puzzles involving people, this is an excellent book. As a study of group dynamics and clashing personality types within a disaster setting there really is nothing else like it in the genre. A good segment of the reading public would be those people who enjoy reading mysteries not so much for the dénouement but rather for how the various parties think and act would adore River. Also, those readers steeped in religion will find the allegorical implications of people operating in the absence of God profoundly affected by the ending of this tale.

WHY YOU SHOULD PASS:

This book requires an incredible amount of patience. There will be times that even these most patient readers will be tempted to give up and move on. The detailed examination of each and every crewmember plus their motivations and desires is so exhaustive and so unrelenting that you've really got to be into this kind of thing to even venture into the River. The plot moves at about the same pace as the stars wheel in the sky. For those readers who have blazed through English Lit courses in college, River reads, for good or ill, very much like a Henry James novel--horribly trying but with immense rewards. If you are the sort of reader who looks for immediate payoff--and that, without being insulting, is certainly a large body of the speculative fiction reading public--then you should look for something else.
