Why aren't Greene's novels on Kindle yet?

Journey Without Maps is a non-fiction work filled with reflections, character sketches, and sometimes dreamlike images. It's not easy to compare it with any other book, for me; it's essentially a travel diary, an account of a rather irrational trek across Liberia that Green undertook in 1935, accompanied only by his cousin and the team of hired bearers who carried their hammocks, water filtration gear, etc. The book is fairly short and episodic, though it occasionally drifts into memories of England; even a couple of the author's dreams are included, nor do they seem out of place; the recounting is largely chronological, but it's always in limited detail--these are sketches--and much of what Greene recalls here is strange, perplexing, suggestive--these are, after all, a man's memories of far-away places, in a time before the Second World War. While the journey is occasionally dangerous, this is not a thriller: the danger comes mainly from local politics. For the most part, the journey is simply exhausting--especially near its end. The trek doesn't end up "proving" anything; it simply happened.

The treat here of course is Graham Greene's prose. It's a constant frustration to me (and surely others!) that his novels aren't offered yet on Kindle (except as audibles), so the chance to re-read, at very least, Journey Without Maps on my Kindle was a very welcome surprise--but, at the same time, it does remind us we can't yet enjoy The Comedians, Brighton Rock, etc., on Kindle. Still, this is English writing of the very finest sort, so straightforward and unembroidered, and yet of (somehow) such near-magical lucidity--if you've read Greene before, you will know what I mean; if you haven't, well, at least there is now this little bonbon available. I expect to read it many more times.

Well He Did Find Greeneland

It may seem odd to contemporary readers that a travel book written 70 years ago, would still resonate with readers today. However, a perceptive travel book usually is as much about the author as it is about the customs and peoples and places he visits or she, or in this case they.

In the case of Greene, this type of book is a veritable treasure trove of information about the creative process and the influences that went into some of his later fiction. In this book in particular I hear Scobie's rain in the "Heart of the Matter", or Query's meandering river in "A Burnt Out Case." Even the format of the book which begins as all good travel books should, with the very beginning of the trip, in this case England, hints at the sea voyage of Brown, Smith, and Jones in "The Comedians" as they reach their destination in Haiti.

Yet this is not simply a collection of influences and descriptive details that will be used by some well meaning graduate student on his journey through academia, but also an insightful story about travel at the time. I cannot fathom why anyone would wish to put not only himself, but his female cousin, through such a forbidding journey but it does illustrate what unique characters Greene and family truly were.

If you are familiar with Greene's work and have not read this book does so and read the signposts of his future work. If you just want to experience what travel was like in central Africa almost a century ago this book will put you in another's steps.

It is curious as has been mentioned that so few of Greene's books are available for e readers which I find disconcerting. Also I did check my old copy of the Penguin edition and I am at a loss to explain why the introduction was not in the electronic version with may present an obstacle to some readers. I fear that Penguin is among those publishing houses which are combating the e-reader trend,

A quick read that was enough to detail the main points and give me food for thought to make positive financial changes!

Reading is one of my favorite hobbies, but I find myself getting less and less time to read due to life being so crazy busy. My magazine rack is full; my night stand loaded with books, my library books go back partially read and my Kindle full of unread titles !!

This is where these key takeaway books are great!! This is the second such book I have read, and though for me personally I am not sure the fiction category would be my choice, for nonfiction books I am required to read for work, or books such as this where they have some important life skills to share -the paired down version is an excellent idea!

I have always been interested in learning more money management skills. Now I have managed to fulfill many of the tips in this book -such as paying off student loans, becoming debt free and creating an emergency saving fund. But I still feel as though I could manage my finanical future better and build a better nest egg; and this book took the major points of this book and quickly and efficiently explained them.

I will say at first I found the book repeated the key takeaways which I found a little odd. However it then went on to explain each of the steps in greater detail. I found myself yearning for more detail in some sections such as best ways to invest in college savings -the book talks about Ramsey's daughter saving money by attending a local college, but did not go into detail about the best ways to invest college money - but for that I suppose I would read the entire book. But in other areas I was amazed to be inspired to make changes despite this being less than 30 pages long!

I quickly got through this and our family got into deep discussions about amounts to put into 401k verses a Roth and Mutual funds. I was also skeptical about the section that suggests you pay off your mortgage until I discovered some very real, basic and attainable steps that I was able to put into place that would make a difference such as rounding up my payment.

The book can be read quickly -very quickly in 15 to 30 minutes - but does an excellent job of highlighting the main steps and going into enough detail that you can make changes ! I doubt I would have ever got around to reading the full book, but this really did contain enough detail that I have been able to seriously consider and in some cases implement some of the ideas to really build that future nest egg and protect my financial future!

What is the Total Money Makeover? The original book by Dave Ramsey is a book teaching you how to go from being "debt ridden to financially secure". There are seven baby steps which are all briefly listed in this Eureka book/summary. The Key Takeaways are the seven baby steps in more detail PLUS this last one:

If you feel like you are drowning in debt and/or want to be a better steward of your money then this may well be the book for you. It doesn't take much savvy to look around and realize that debt is not a good thing. The main key to financial freedom and the steps in this book working for you, is YOUR desire to be debt free. You CAN do it but it may take some will power!

What is an emergency fund? How much should you have in it? Thinking of using debt to leverage yourself into prosperity? Not a good idea according to Dave Ramsey!

Even though this Eureka book is a summary and NOT the original book, it contains a LOT of information in it. Most of it is common sense but it may be just what you need to start that walk towards financial freedom rather than being a slave to debt. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Must read for those looking for financial advice

One of the best if not the best financial book on the market. Bought this summary to help keep me refreshed on the top ideas. Great summary guide that offered so much. It gave me additional insight into the book. It gets right down to the important stuff and cuts out all the fluff. Would recommend to anyone interested in the book or looking for a top rated financial advice book. Just applying a few of the key ideas I see a difference in my bank account!

About the Author

The Living is Newbery Award-winning author Matt de la Peña’s fifth novel and for which he received the Pura Belpré Author Honor Award. He attended the University of the Pacific on a basketball scholarship and went on to earn a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing at San Diego State University. He lives in Brooklyn, New York, where he teaches creative writing. Not just your average summer job gone wrong book!

Wow! This is so much more than just your average poor boy gets stranded in the ocean with a little rich girl after a tsunami takes out the cruise ship book! Shy is just a kid trying to make some much needed summer money by working on a cruise ship. He is trying to help his mom make ends meet and there is a strange disease that is affecting his whole family in San Diego. He has made friends on the ship and there is one girl in particular that he would like to know a lot better. Things look good until the night he tried to stop a man from committing suicide. Things get a lot worse in short order. We find Shy and one other survivor stranded on a lifeboat fighting sharks, hunger and the brutal sun. Will they make it to safety? Did others make it or are they alone? What is happening with this strange epidemic that is wiping out much of the population in the West? Fast-paced storyline with cliff hangers to keep us going until the next installment, "The Living" is sure to please adventure seeking readers.

Highly Recommend

I don't "review" books in general, but when I read one that is worth telling everyone about I'm happy to give a shout-out. "The Living" by Matt de la Pena is most definitely one of those books. It is probably worth mentioning that I am not the target audience for this book, and it is not the type of book I normally choose to read. Matt sold me on himself, as a person, first, and that intrigued me to read something he wrote.

I ran across Matt de la Pena for the first time at the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators conference in Missouri a few weeks ago. He was one of the keynote speakers. I had a manuscript critique scheduled at the same time (with his editor, interestingly enough), so I missed the first half of the talk. When I came back into the conference room, the whole place was laughing and fully engaged. That's something unusual to find after the long morning they had already been through and right after lunch. It didn't take me long to figure out why they were so entertained. He was interesting to listen to and told his stories in a delightful and humorous way. I knew I would have to check out his books right away.

The first few books Matt has written are YA stories focused on inner-city and low income kids facing challenges in their own communities. I love the fact that those books are out there, but I wasn't sure how much I could connect with them--being near 50 and about as WASPy as one can get. But his new book, "The Living," stepped outside of that and put his characters in a world I could relate to. Some of the language and phrasing threw me off a bit at first, but I got used to it quickly and just got lost in the story. It's hard to say much of anything without giving away the fun of being shocked by events as they unfold. Let's just say that I'm already terrified of cruise ships, and this story basically confirmed all my worst nightmares about what would happen if I ever set foot on one (except the part where I have to decide which of my daughters to save). The main character, Shy, is on edge and put through the wringer with literally end-of-the-world events and conspiracies. I anticipated some of the problems before they were revealed (not that this is a bad thing, to feel a step ahead of the characters), but I'm not so sure a YA audience would see some of it coming. Super fun!

I loved this book from beginning to end. Well, almost. I was highly disappointed in the ending because it didn't actually end! And that's the way any good writer should leave you feeling when there is another book to come. There's a writer's joke that you should chase your main character up a tree and then throw rocks at him for a while before you let him down. Poor Shy spends pretty much all of the story up that proverbial tree with huge boulders being flung at him. At the end, he's up a different tree and you can only imagine that there are cannons aimed in his direction. I can't wait to see how it all works out! The sequel, "The Hunted," comes out until the fall of 2014.

What has been really fun is to tweet with Matt de la Pena along the way. Every time I have tweeted something about it, he has been quick to respond. That made the journey even more fun (@mattdelapena). I even have a new word (blanquita) to impress my daughter's Venezuelan boyfriend at Thanksgiving. They never taught me that one in high school Spanish. Maybe he can explain the deep meaning of "Sancho" to me as well.

I highly recommend this book for YA readers, especially boys who have limited choices that don't involve vampires or blood and guts. There is just enough boy/girl stuff to keep it interesting, but not so much that you couldn't have it available in a classroom or school library.

An Abruptly Ending Popcorn Read

Have you ever read one of those books that leave you scratching your head? The Living by Matt De La Pena did just that to me.

I selected this book after reading a blurb about it in a magazine. The blurb said a few things that immediately caught my interest: dystopia, pandemic, California Earthquake. It indicated that this was a new and exciting voice in dystopic fiction.

I bought it, and there are a few things you need to know:

First of all, this isn't dystopic…yet. There is a pandemic in the background. It doesn't become important to the story until the very end of the book. This is, instead, reminiscent of those slightly cheesy block buster disaster flicks you see on a certain science fiction network. (I described it to someone as largely a mix of Titanic and Life of Pi.)

The book is also extremely short for what I paid for it. I wouldn't have minded if the book didn't end abruptly. I think somewhere it's described as a cliffhanger. It's not. It's basically the end of a chapter and the book is over until the next one.

Now, I know it sounds a bit like I'm panning the book. I'm really not, but I think you should know what you're getting and what you're not.

Thinking of the book as a disaster book, it's fun, it's cheesy, it's thoroughly improbable, and I actually did enjoy it (once I stopped looking for it to be a dystopia!). You've got a terrific group of characters, some heartbreak, action and adventure, and yes…cheese. Now it is improbable. No spoilers here, but you are left scratching your head a lot. Why on earth did they do that? Wait a second…if they were going to do that to them, why bother with everything else they did?

As I ended the book (abruptly), I was left with this: If the second book had been available at that moment, would I have bought it? In a split second. In spite of my complaints, I want to know what happens next. The book hints that the next one should finally get us into the dystopic elements and I want to see what happens.

(Oh…on a personal note: Dear Dystopic Authors, if you are going to name a pandemic disease after a guy named Romero, please be aware that your readers are going to expect George. Not some random made up Romero. Thank you.)

I've given this three stars for what it is (not what it tried to be) - a blast of a popcorn read. I think if it had any sort of conclusion, I would have upped it to four stars. You shouldn't leave a girl so…unsatisfied…

A fantastic book not only for women, but for MEN too!

As a man reading Orgasm Unleashed, this book provided valuable insights into female sexuality, and helped rewire my perspective and my relationship to women's pleasure.

Already having passed this book onto a male friend, I can highly recommend this book for both women AND men.

Our sex education in the West is rubbish, coming from high school teachings primarily based around biology, pornography based on unrealistic expectations and philosophies (pornographic philosophies - I wonder if those two words have ever been used together before?!), and magazines spouting superficial sex talk and hints and tips.

It's about time as mature adults that we step up to the plate, take the reigns and actually start to learn and embody these mature teachings and gain a much better understanding and embodiment of our sexuality. This book is a fantastic read that has a lot to offer.

Eyal's workshops are incredible too, so if you ever get the chance, don't hesitate. A very insightful man full of knowledge and wisdom regarding male and female sexuality and tantric pleasure. He has certainly helped to broaden my perspective on this incredibly significant aspect of life.

Eyal knows his stuff, has done his research, but more importantly has actually experienced what he's writing about with his clients... the tools and techniques he recommends are tried, tested and proven to result in deep, blissful, ecstatic orgasmic states, release of tension and trauma, empowerment, self-love, confidence and amazing sex!
This book redefines orgasm and what is possible for women - letting go of the narrow clitoral only focus and expanding that view to embrace a vast and infinite universe of orgasmic bliss. As a female reader, I loved how encouraging the tone of the book is and how much permission-giving there is embedded throughout the book. Even at first glance I learned things I did not know about my body and my orgasmic potential and I felt encouraged to explore things I had wondered about and things I had never even considered. The fact that the author is a man adds a certain dimension to what this book can give women readers. It shows that our pleasure experiences matter and are taken seriously and in fact worshipped. Good book for the skeptic

Excellent book. The author does a great job of citing all kinds of sources pertaining to all the claims.

He presents the evidence available on certain cases, and draws conclusions from what's available. Don't let the fact that its written by a priest deter you. He is very objective. This is the most in-depth book available on the subject.

(Montague Summers has a book by the same title, but I believe it is different. Don't confuse the two.

Interesting read

I read this book because it was referenced in another book I was reading about incorrupt saints. The author (a priest) covers incorrupt saints as well as stigmatics, ecstasies, etc. One of the most fascinating things to me was about people who consumed nothing other than the Holy Eucharist for years. Some were proven to be frauds, while others appear genuine. Very interesting.

About the Author

Luciano da Fontoura Costa is a full professor at the Instituto de Física de São Carlos, University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, and head of the Cybernetic Vision Research Group and the Multidisciplinary Computing Group. He holds BScs in Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, as well as a MSc in Applied Physics and a PhD in Electronic Engineering. Roberto M. Cesar Jr. holds a BSc in Computer Science, a M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering, and a Ph.D in Computational Physics. He is currently a lecturer at the University of Sao Paulo.
