Sorry to rave about an out-of-print book, but this one will be well worth tracking down. You'll thank me!
I am wary of men who cook. Believe me, from personal experience. There is considerable power in the kitchen, which we girls have had wrenched from us. Our mothers were more fortunate. How I wish I could yell at a man, `Your Supper's in the oven!' Alas, progress.
This story unfolds to the unsuspecting reader like a fairy tale, but it soon turns grim indeed, pun intended. Conrad is the chef who mysteriously arrives in town: `Six and a half feet tall, clad in black and riding on a bicycle'. He not only knows exactly what he wants, but he knows what everyone else wants as well. He very quickly becomes the most feared and revered man in the town of Cobb. His power over women is to seduce them with his dark culinary art, make them totally dependent, and their waistlines are is then his. He is not a man to cross at the pub. Most macho cooks are good knife fighters. A particularly gruesome scene takes place when he takes on a rival chef who threatens to bone him like a chicken, butcher him like a hog...
Never underestimate a man who cooks, and cooks well. Had it been Eve and Conrad in the Garden of Eden, Conrad would have taken the apple, diced it with his glinting chef's knife and transformed it into Calvados.
Harry Kressing writes a dark tale indeed. He has been compared to Kafka and Orwell, and quite rightly so. The genre is fantasy for those who appreciate cuisine and has undeniable makings of a cult book. This is a dish which is still good and should be reheated. I wish some Evil Corporate Publisher would see his way to a reprint.

A grim fairy tale

This grim fairy tale for adults follows the path of Conrad, the sinister chef who has plans afoot that aren't all as they appear from first glance.
A darkly humorous tale of food and gluttony, you have to admire the skills Conrad executes to reach his ultimate goal.
I awarded three stars because although I admire the writing and the clever plot I can't say with all honesty I enjoyed this overly much.

Lysistrata is one of the few surviving plays written by Aristophanes. Originally performed in classical Athens in 411 BC, it is a comic account of one woman's extraordinary mission to end The Peloponnesian War. Lysistrata persuades the women of Greece to withhold sexual privileges from their husbands and lovers as a means of forcing the men to negotiate peace — a strategy, however, that inflames the battle between the sexes. The play is notable for being an early exposé of sexual relations in a male-dominated society. The dramatic structure represents a shift away from the conventions of Old Comedy, a trend typical of the author's career. It was produced in the same year as Thesmophoriazusae, another play with a focus on gender-based issues, just two years after Athens' catastrophic defeat in the Sicilian Expedition.
This is a new translation by Ranjit Bolt.

Pick your translation carefully

Having read several different translations of Lysistrata, I can report that the one you select may make all the difference in your opinion of this early comedy. Roche's translation is very vulgar but has good footnotes: get ready for cockney Spartans, however. Jack Lindsay's translation, done in 1925 (included in the Bantam edition of Aristophanes) seems to be overly literary in comparison to the original but lacks notes. It reads well, though sounds a little old-fashioned. The bawdry is present but made less direct; in this one the Spartan dialect is Scottish.

I found Parker's translation to be the least satisfactory. The "hillbilly" dialect he gives the Spartans is painfully overdone,not to mention inaccurate, and the speeches are awkward and pedestrian. An excellent edition overall is Alan H. Sommerstein's in the Penguin Classic "Aristophanes: Lysistrata and Other Plays." The introduction and notes are extremely informative, and the translation itself strikes the right note to represent Aristophanes' style in English. (Once again, though, the Spartans are Scots.)

But perhaps the best choice is Sarah Ruden's 2003 edition. Her dialogue is unusually funny without straying too far from the original. Added value comes from her four very readable essays on Greek democracy, warfare, women, and comedy. It's also printed on quality paper and comes with a great cover!

Make love, not war!

"Lysistrata," the play by Aristophanes, has been published in an anonymous translation as part of the Dover Thrift Editions series. The opening commentary on the text notes that this play dates back to 411 BCE. Aristophanes tells the story of his title character, an Athenian woman who, weary of war, conceives a bold plan: she enlists the women of Greece to refuse to have sex with their men until the men make peace.
The plot of this play is thus quite simple, but it is marvelously handled by the author. The play is a rich and effective mix of slapstick antics, bawdy wordplay, and biting sociopolitical commentary. At the center of this enjoyable play is the commanding figure of Lysistrata. Articulate and resolute, she is truly one of the great characters of world drama; she's a woman with a bold vision.
Although it is a funny comedy, "Lysistrata" does deal with some serious issues that remain relevant after all these centuries. Recommended as a companion text: "Necessary Targets," a play by Eve Ensler. This non-comedic drama also deals with the issue of women in a country at war.

Santamarina focuses on The Narrative of Sojourner Truth, Eliza Potter's A Hairdresser's Experience in High Life, Harriet Wilson's Our Nig, and Elizabeth Keckley's Behind the Scenes. She argues that beyond black reformers' calls for abolitionist work, these former slaves and freeborn black women wrote about their own overlooked or disparaged work as socially and culturally valuable to the nation. They promoted the status of wage labor as a mark of self-reliance and civic virtue when many viewed African American working women as "drudges." As Santamarina demonstrates, these texts offer modern readers new perspectives on the emergence of the vital African American autobiographical tradition, dramatizing the degree to which black working women participated in and shaped American rhetorics of labor, race, and femininity.

Practical, informative and easy to read

This book is a fantastic guide to online marketing, and the Internet in general.

As a marketing practitioner, I've been finding my way own way through the online world for some time now but have always wondered if what I was doing was 'correct' and it would take me ages to find out what I needed to know through researching online articles, blogs, etc.

I found this book to be fairly concise and focused. The references to other online articles that it includes are vast and can they be very absorbing. The best part about this is that it is written by someone that clearly has vast experience in the field and, unlike with some online articles, you get the feeling that what is advised is really 'best practice'.

I'd recommend this book for anyone interested in digital marketing.

This book is really well put together. It is the ultimate guide if you know about digital but still can't seem to put everything together. This book gives everything structure. After reading this book everything started to fall in place for me. The whole book is structured into 4 main sections - Think, Create, Engage and Optimise. This is just so brilliantly put together. Pay for this book it worth every single cent. Robe Stokes and Quirk have done a magically job with this book and it's now my number one companion on digital matters. This book helps me structure my digital presentations, plans and even reports very professionally, i just work through the presented steps and i end up with a very professionally document. For instance, I had just finished a proposal on social media strategy, after reading this book, i ended up adding the flow on page 373 which talks about the uses on social media. During the presentation to client, we ended up talking about that flow for 60% of the entire presentation.

With more than 25 years in the culinary profession, there aren't many places Chef Robert Irvine hasn't cooked or challenges he hasn't had to cook his way out of. During his time in the British Royal Navy and in the years that followed, Robert has cooked his way through Europe, the Far East, the Caribbean and the Americas, in hotels, on the high seas and even for the Academy Awards; and that was before his career in TV. As the host of one of the Food Network's highest rated shows, Restaurant: Impossible, going on it's 12th season, Robert is best known for saving struggling restaurants across America by assessing and overhauling the restaurant's weakest spots. 
Going on its fourth year, Robert continues to tour his live show, Robert Irvine LIVE, across the US. Robert is the author of three cookbooks, Mission: Cook! and Impossible to Easy; and FIT Fuel, a lifestyle -food and fitness- book. Robert was previously the host of Fitness: Impossible, A Hero's Welcome, Food Network's Restaurant Express, Dinner: Impossible and Worst Cooks in America. At the start of his TV career Robert owned and operated two restaurants in Hilton Head, SC, Robert Irvine's Eat! and NOSH. Not just another diet/exercise book

First off, let me say how pleasantly surprised I was at the size and quality of the book itself. The pictures really pop off the page and there's a great weight to the book itself.

Let me say that I'm still in the process of reading it, but I can already see the benefits of keeping this book on the coffee table and using it time and time again as a source of reference.

I really enjoy the mind-body element of the book and how readers are encouraged to change from within before making any physical changes. For me, this is what separates this book from all of the other diet/exercise books out there.

The recipes are easy to follow and the pictures look great (and real!). The shopping tips are great! The exercise section really has something for everyone. Bodybuilding, powerlifting, cardio, HIIT, and time saving workouts.

I would highly recommend this book and can honestly say I will be coming back to this book over and over! Well done!

My wife and I received our copy of FITFUEL and started reading it. It's really hard to put this book down! FITFUEL is a tremendous wealth of knowledge! Such an easy read leaving you captivated and wanting more. Photos and explanations are spot on. The benefits from Chef Irvine's life long passion for staying fit and eating healthy are endless.
